American Expats, what do you miss most?

Post new topic

Hello everyone!

I'm going to be living in Italy this summer and travelling through Europe for about three months.  Even though I'm not really going to be an expat, I was curious as to what you wished you had brought with you from the US.  What kinds of food, toiletries and other American goods aren't really available in your country?  Also, do you know of any places online that ship internationally things like American food.  I must admit that I have a real addiction to cereal, and I hear that it really isn't a big deal outside of the US.  So, any tips or suggestions?

Thanks!

Bob K

I miss 24 hour electricity (we do have generator back up), decent roads to drive and good wine. All in all don't miss much.

Hey Bob K, thanks for replying.  I'm going to be staying in Florence, and I'm not sure which part of it yet.  Anyway, I hear that the electricity can be rather spotty there depending on where one lives.

Driving though doesn't look like something I'll be doing much of, but thanks for the heads up!  The wine probably won't be a problem either considering the country.  I'm really just concerned that I'm going to forget something that costs too much or Europe doesn't have!  I guess that I'm just a packrat.....

I miss Dr Pepper... I can live without it but I would love a drink now and then!

I also miss controling our own thermostat... we are in an apartment and once the radiators are turned on the only way to regulate the temperature is to open or close a window!

Cereal is definitely a problem. I wanted to make a recipe using plain rice krispies and couldn't find ANY unsugared cereal that would be remotely close.
I miss cell phone plans that exist in the realm of human comprehension.
I miss cheaper international postage on letters/postcards.
I miss the following candy: peanut butter cups, butterfinger, salted nut rolls, twin bing.  And disgusting as it sounds, I miss Little Debbie snacks.
I miss stores (grocery and otherwise) where you can get everything on your list.
I miss (relatively) cheap contact solution.
I miss cheap mexican food ingredients.  They have a small selection here and it's strangely expensive.  Our diet was heavy on the Mexican in the US because it was cheap!!

Convenience foods are not as good/saltier here than in the US.  (Can you imagine saltier??? But it's true!)  Also if you want to cook using any of the following, you might want to bring them: American measuring cups/spoons, pie pan, baking pan in your preferred dimensions (9x13 or what have you) - the common dimensions where you go might be different.

I miss Taco Bell. That's it.

Pepperoni pizza with extra cheese from Pappa John's (with garlic sauce for dipping the bones)!
Crest toothpaste.
Ingredients even remotely close to the ones I used back home  when I cook.
English.

I miss Taco Bell, clothing dryers, butterfingers candy, and walmart.
not really things that you can pack!  Honestly, i wouldn't worry about it too much.  Italy is going to have everything you need, but it won't be exactly like it is at home.
and sorry if it is TMI, ( i can't tell from your user name if you are a guy or a girl), but if you're a girl you might consider bringing american tampons!

The only thing I used to bring back from the US was Bounce Dryer sheets, but I have broken that habit.  As far as cereal goes, you will see a decent selection of Nestle and some Kelloggs.  You probably won´t see General Mills, so if you like their oatmeal, bring it.  But..you are only going for 3 months!!  Why don´t you just try to rough it a bit and do the local thing?

Where to start...? I miss the variety of food back home. Also the variety of beer--I'm so sick of yellow beer. And the ease of buying real coffee grounds. I also kinda miss browsing the used book stores--and I'll probably run out of books by September.

I don't miss driving at all.

I think that for the americans expat in Morocco, they don't have such problems just because  in morocco you find a variety of spices, coulours. well, it's an islamic country but you can find disconights, bars and many othere entertainement places.

I miss tex-mex and peanut butter cups, although they've started selling PB cups here sometimes so I don't miss those too much.

I try to buy my contact lens solution in the US still because it's MUCH CHEAPER. Oh, and discount clothing stores like TJ Maxx are sorely missing here.

I also miss huge selections of English-language books that I can browse in a real bookstore.

Other than that I'm not lacking or missing much else. The general absence of clothes dryers isn't too annoying to me, there are plenty of breakfast cereals here, as well as reliable electricity, heat, and hot water.
