Need help - American wants to retire in Europe: France, Italy, Portug

Myself and my wife will be able to collect company pensions soon and we would like to try to retire in Europe.聽 As all Americans聽 we are primarily interested in formalities;: how can a person live in those countries as a retiree, how will be able to get the US Social security, how can聽 we get medical care if we reside in Europe,聽 etc. We plan to buy an apartment聽 by cash and settle.

Appreciate any help. We consider France, Italy or Portugal for now.
