Moving to Gibraltar

Post new topic

RRBrigi

Hi,

I am new here.

We (my husband, our son and me) live in England. We moved to England from another country 10 years ago. We work in England full time and we would like to move to Gibraltar around Sept 2014. We would like another baby and we thought until I am on maternity leave we try our life in Gibraltar. My husband works from home, so he can keep his job. I am an accountant and I need to find a job in Gibraltar after my maternity leave finished (around June 2015).

My question is that until I am on maternity leave we will have around £1900.00 for a month to leave in. Probably we would like to leave in Spain close to the border, so after I found work I will be able to go to work to Gibraltar and live in Spain. We would like to rent a house with 3 bedrooms and a garden for the kids. Also we need a very fast internet (for my husband job) and we go out for dinner, cinema, etc.. twice a month. We do not have a car and I think we do not need if we can find a place very close to the border. (How good is the transport system in Spain?) Do you think can we live from £1900.00 per month or it is not enough money?

My son is 5; he will be 6 by the time we will arrive. I am interested about his school possibility. He speaks English, but I do not want him to forget it, so either a Spanish primary school when he can learn English or a Gibraltarian primary school would be good for him. I think until I am on maternity leave he needs to go to a Spanish school, but if I get a job in Gibraltar and live in Spain is he entitled to a free Gibraltarian primary school? Also does Gibraltar or Spain have nursery for 1 year old children? Is it free? If not could you tell me how much is it roughly per a day?

I need some information about the health care. If only I work in Gibraltar (my husband work for an English company) will we get free health care in Gibraltar (all of us) if we live in Spain?

My last question is about the work. I am an accountant, I finished my AAT in England and I have an accounting degree back from my original country. I am not a manager, but I have 8 years accounting experience in a multinational road maintenance company. I do not have a British passport, but I have an EU passport. Any opinion about how much chance I have to find a work in Gibraltar? Is there any demand for accountants? Also how long does it take to get through the border every morning and afternoon?

Thanks for reading it and thanks for your answers indeed.

Hi and welcome

I will try to answer some of your questions.

£1900 a month, a flat in Gib will cost you from £1000.mnth so can you live on £900/mnth ?  Prices in Gib are similar to UK but maybe slightly higher depending on products.

A flat in Gib is not a house with garden.

In Spain you could easily get a house with garden for much less than a flat in Gib, but you will need to factor in a certain amount of travel , at least 5 miles from the frontier to be in a nice area.

If you choose to live in Spain your son will not be entitled to free education in Gib.

Nursery schools are abundant but I don't think there are any free ones.

Healthcare, if you work in Gib then you will get some free healthcare but I do not think this applies to the rest of your family ( please note I am not 100% certain of my facts here )

Work, Gibraltar is a Financial Centre lots of opportunities for Number Crunchers

Border queues are unpredictable, if you have been watching UK news you will see we have had major problems lately. However this has not affected pedestrians this time but it has done before and who knows about the future

Please could you tell me how much are the electricity, gas and water for a 2 bed apartment in Gibraltar? Are there any other monthly costs for a apartment above the rent (e.g.: insurance)?

Which area is good to live with small children in Gibraltar? Where we have neighbours with small children, nice parks close to us, not too much noise through the night.

Can I rent a two bed apartment for 4 person (one room for us, and 1 room for the children)? Or the agency would not let me to do this, they will let only 3 bedrooms?

GrumpyOldBloke

Water and electricity from £80 / mth No gas in Gib

Telephone / internet £36 / mth no free calls

Other costs are community block charges, ie for cleaning and maintenance and rates. Eg Ocean Heights are £3K for charges, ours are a few hundred. Our rates are £150 a year but our flat is small.

The agency won't give two hoots what they rent. I usually recommend Bray's at Ocean Village.

All areas are good to live in, Gib is mostly a safe place.

There is a big difference between your entitlements between living in Spain and living in Gib. Live in Spain, work in Gib, few benefits. Live in Gib, work, your family gets the package.

Education in Spain will mean your son/children will speak Spanish only. In Gib they will speak both.

Public transport in Spain is good, although irrelevant for border crossings.

Hi,

Thanks for the answers.

I wanted to stay in Spain for a couple of years to allow my child to learn Spanish (he already speaks two other languages).

How good is the Spanish teaching in Gibraltar? By the time they finish primary school will the children speak Spanish in the same way as a native speaker or they will be fluent?

At the moment it seems Gibraltar is better option for us than Spain (because I do not want my child to forget English).

Please could you tell me how good is the health care in Gibraltar? My son had a hearth surgery when he was a baby and he needs regular check ups.

Please could you tell me if limit the number of person who can live in a rented apartment as they do in the UK? (e.g.: for 2 bedroom apartment the max person is 3, for 1 bed apartement the max person is 2 who can rent it out)

Thanks.

Please read my response above. Gib is not the UK.   You can have 20 people in your one-bed flat for all the estate agent cares,  there is a couple upstairs in our block in a two bed flat with three kids,  Does that make it clear or not?

Gibbos are bilingual.  Teaching at school is in English.  People here speak llanito, we mix our languages.  Your son will keep up his English in school but make sure you speak Spanish at home with him. If you don't speak Spanish, learn. Pronto.

Health care in Gib is what you would expect from a place with 30,000 people.  Serious stuff gets shipped to the UK or Spain.
