Hi Expats (please only really expats), please read that good
Currently I am planning a trip to support a virtually hopeless project, homing around 60 blind/almost blind/poor/disabled children between 5 and 17 years. Number of kids is growing
No, this not turn into a bike or other party a like, this tour will cost YOUR MONEY an you gonna work, possible one of the most shitty, unpaid, but rewarding jobs.
time plan mid January 2014- Just before Tet, anything between 4 and 20 days
The plan:
- each expat participating moves on own costs to a small town, something like 30 km of Hanoi, finds him/herself accommodation
One or more of the following should/could be done onsite:
1. Donate MONEY - for the project, donate MONEY for renovation/materials, cleaning, laundry, entertain the kids (we will integrate us into the permanent care team). They finally shall decide, where the bucks are needed most. Additional, you can spend out of line and decide, what it might be used for
2. Many Parents (yes, some of them still have parents) are to poor to collect their Kinds for Tet, there is for sure transport/care needed, to bring them home and pocket money for the kids
3. Some/many Kids have nobody, they possible can be singled out in smaller groups to get some "family" like atmosphere for TET or similar - depending on decision of the permanent team
At this moment, the current care taking team is not aware of this plan, I will however submit that, as soon a number of expats showing their interest.
If you have some moneys to "spend" and time and you are willing to do the needed, please register here.
I myself plan to be there from about January the 18th to 28/29th for about 10 days
FAQ's, despite not asked yet
- I have no money to donate, but can I join on my own costs? YES
- Can I get transport/meals costs back? -NO
- Where is the place? It is about 30 km SW of Hanoi (exact address will be provided, if and when interest is shown)
- What kind of people are taking currently care? It's a German guy, married here in Vietnam, who support this project since years and pours in all, what he can spare. He also has a team in the German speaking countries, which support with parent ships, single donations, clothing, some factories, who are giving/sponsoring/paying
- Is the money 100% which I spend, used there? Yes, that is warranted by his name and corporations and public book keeping.
- I only want to spend a buck? - Yes you can, details where, how to, will be advised, if requested
- What is with this kids, why they are there? They are either abandoned/homeless, blind, getting blind, disabled. In fact, you will not find a normal, healthy kid there
- Can I bring/send/donate something? Yes, whatever you have (clothing, household items, music instruments .... . For sending donations: address details will advised upon request
- Does the poster here, earn something from this action? No
If admins please can pin that for a couple of month or more, depending on positive responses?
I'm not in Vn but willing to donate some $
cth wrote:I'm not in Vn but willing to donate some $
Thanks, I will advise complete details soon, as the aim is TET
Yes place the info as available.
Solo1 wrote:Yes place the info as available.
I do have all the info already and it will be shared.
This one is planned as a kind of pre-Tet / Tet support and currently I want to find out the responses of potential participants, to see, which volume on people might be needing accommodation (it's a pretty small town,, you possible can walk around in less than hour), how to travel ..... .
If you just desperate to do something now (they need and they will take), send a PM, than you get the details*.
* that is for everyone, who wants to do NOW. Just be reminded, there is no single penny going in to organisation, to feed you you visa ....
Gute Sache!
Thank you for posting this, I hope I'll be able to come too, think I should be able to make it and if not, I'll donate some cash!
From my current activities in such projects in HCMC I could also help you out with medical stuff, such as a few boxes of plasters, sterile bandages, nutrition supplement (DHA, EPA, AA, cholin, vitamin etc...) and maybe we could hook up with a few other people I know (both in VN and abroad) to generate cash, medical supplies or media coverage to get more attention on this project.
Is water purification a topic?
Let me know if such things are needed and I would be glad to help out where I can, free of charge!

Is water purification a topic? - almost certainly. The current situation there is, the are living in a breaking down house, potholes, holes in the roof, wired electric and blank wiring. They now basically have fixed/secured the house, adding a few steel posts and so on, but that will in best case delay the break down - therefore, clean water is almost sure an issue, but i can / wil cross check.
Medicals: yes, they need all, what kids need +++++ most are specific medicamention, heart OP's ..., kidney transplant, eye amputations (most of them are agent orange related)-the kids getting slowly blind. There are OP's, which somehow cut out some "bad" parts of it, this will delay the dying of the eyes 1-2-3-4 years. If this is not happen, eyes must be removed immediately, so that no infection is carried to ..what ever. Gruesome stuff and the kids know even about.
So I bet, you can drop their a lot.
If i remember right, such eye operation is about 80 USD and for that, they can see some years longer. They have one doctor who "works" that and comes quite frequently there along to help.
Hoking up is good. Overall the place/conditions are so, that they have a number of kids waiting for funding of Heart OP's and similar stuff. They cost easy many thousands of USD +transportation and care.
About 1/3 to 1/2 of the kids have now sponsorships, some even double/triple, however, not sufficient, to get such OP's quickly funded. Eating, schooling, clothing comes first
And quite acute are clothing, warm, blankets, pillows ..., you name and they not have (enough). Until a year ago, they not even had enough rice bowls and not single chop stick for all of them. In Germany and around they have now collected a whole 30ft container with clothing, toys and household goodies, which possible gets on the way in October.
So I am sure, there is much more needed
If you want to act prior, please contact via PM, as this is planned as a kind of TET relief

speak German is well?
All details here. Also for all others, who want do now.
Where is Julien, when we need him most???
I should be around then, and I want to help. But, isn't traffic to the north a grid lock, during that time of year, and the weather is mighty cold?
Just curious, are there any religious affiliations?
It has been quite sometimes, since l3ully last tried his hands at anything good. So, I don't think he will try to convert us all this time, right l3ully???
I've supported numerous eye disease research in the past. It's something close to me as I'm also half blind. Not as bad as these kids that are totally blind. Without my glasses I'd be near blind and I think glasses is something we don't think much of cost wise but to one kid it can mean seeing the world.
I'll be in Vietnam during that time but will be super busy. Hopefully the following year I can physically volunteer but in the meanwhile where can I donate?

I am not sure, but I assume, it can be bad. Personally I consider flying to Hanoi and the reminder either bus or moto taxi. That might give me a bit physical work out and ideally just return 1-2 days prior Tet

I'm nibbling at this idea. Toying with the idea of going from Vũng TÃ u to HÃ Nội via motorbike then doing this project. I like D.I.Y. Foreign Aid projects so still nibbling.
It might help if you change your bloody avatar. The four eyes of Rowan Atkinson is tripping me out...seriously I think I might go into an epileptic seizure.

On bike will be to stressy for me. I only ride the miles, I must, not a single extra. Lets start to team up/fix dates of arrival ... . I possible will take the train/bus as I am more comfortable with that. (flying I hate).
Maybe some more will join if the first two getting on.
Avater change - I PROMISE to do it, if a group of more than SEVEN arrives there for more as SEVEN calendar days
Details we can do via PM as long it's a party for 2

jawohl herr kommandant! Haha, all the German I learned I learned from watching Hogan's Heroes (Probably all the German any American knows was probably from watching Hogan's Heroes). To anyone else reading this, it just means, Yes Sir Commander!
Like I said, I'm nibbling at the thought. Going up North is a pretty long ways from the South. So if I'm going, I'll need to plan for a long duration since I want to explore other parts of the North as well. I hear it's starting to get really cold up there and I've gotten accustomed to the tropical heat already.
Still thinking...

Crap, I didn't realize you're in Nha Trang. Thought you were already up North. Well, I just wrote a thread about the trip on the "Iron Road". There's a train stop from Nha Trang up to HÃ Nội.
So train is BEST if you want to recruit people from Hồ Chà Minh City. That way people can ride on the same train and sit together in the same train-car.
Yep, would be good, if some people can agree on the same date/train. During that time, at least for the way up, tickets should be easy to get. Return will be a challenge as the last days prior Tet is commonly hell. Last year, I had to go to Saigon and fight 3 days for single ticket without preferences.
Ok Mr. Epilepsy-Induced-Avatar-Man,
Let me suggest you do this project earlier than the Tết Nguyên Đán holiday to recruit more people. Maybe even a month before hand. Several on this board already mentioned they'll be busy with their families/friends, whatever during the Tết Holiday.
Furthermore, traveling on the roads will be super crazy, crowded and dangerous since many citizens are frantically rushing home. This means fees for travel via train, bus or airplane will be higher. Not to mention hotels.
Ideally you want all the infrastructure work fixed up/repaired prior to the holiday so the families in the village can enjoy and use them for the holiday.
I can go virtually any day, as do not need to ask for holidays. However the biggest need is there just before and during Tet (as number of the kids has no family). The Team there seems to be quite good and solid, however, getting like 60 such kids to their homes and make them ready for it - is a huge lot and when they are gone - than is place and freedom to replace the one or the other thing, paint, wire cables, leave some presents ..... - That is actually the reason so far for my timing.
If I would go now, I bet, they would not associate to Tet despite the efforts would be the same.

Well, the main group would go before Tết at a time of their convenience, do the work, then leave. You can stay behind for a month or two to create the Tết environment. For example.
Tết 2014 falls on January 31st. The main group can go say Tuesday, December 31, 2013 to Thursday, January 9, 2014 to do the repair work and when people have to leave, they just go. You stay until past January 31st. This gives people enough time to dodge the holiday traffic as well as enough time to go to a Tết party or enjoy Tết with their families.Â
khanh44, are you reading this? How's this idea?
I happily join a main group. However, having family here and business is well, I have to return prior Tet. Staff and family want their their pre-Tet parties and stuff, some shopping should be done ... .
When ever a group is ready, I am on.
People will leave when they have to. There is no rule, same for arrival. Each one might have plans between new year and Tet.
In a group is better working and possible more fin is well.
l3ully wrote:...

.
Tết = new year.Â
But I know you meant 1/1/2014, or the Gregorian/Western New Year and Tết being the Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year.
Well, another suggestion is to wrap it around Christmas time. Some people feel particularly charitable during Christmas. That would be stress-free to anyone busy during the Tết festivities since Christmas really has no meaning here.

If you assigned city is right, this is where we want to go . It would be great with some local support.
hello, i and some friends connected to be a volunteer goup.if you need any support from us, pleased let me know.
Hi all, I am in Hanoi. Chrismas is much better time to travel around Vietnam. I am in if the group go during that period. Pls contact me if the group needs any support in advance like accomodation booking, ect. I am Viet Kieu, therefore familiar much more here with locals.
Hi Hanhchristine and gianglegiang,
super. It looks like, a group is building up. If you have already ideas about time frames, please post or PM them, so we from more south can plan. I think, it would be good appearing in a group, so some of the bigger jobs can be done, next to all the odd small ones. Over x-mas will be fine for me to and Tran Hung Dao mentioned similar.
Hi 13ully,
Anytime from 20 Dec up to Tet is ok for me. I hope to see more people would join in. Cheers.
Hi, yah, crhirstmas or the time before tet is ok for us. WE are going to implement our second campaign: Collect old clothes, books and others materials for poor children in Son La province. we are students, so we dont have money to support but we have free time and physical strength. :)WE can help to fix house.

This sounds enough as Hands-On is a big part of the plan
I will propose the next few weeks schedules, so that we see, when it's gonna be the best, meeting for us onsite and do the deed.
Today, I have send PM's to those, who showed interest. Any new comers, wanting to join either:
- x-mas/new year until about January 4th/5th Â
AND/OR
- January 4th/5th until about 16/17th
please send an email to: info (at) it-bizz.net
Those, who want to donate, please use details posted previously.
I3ully,
Please pm your latest. I'll be coming from HCM. Thanks.
