Architectural beauties

Post new topic

Julien

Hi,

When I discover a new city (I am an urban expat), I am always interested in architecture. Let's talk about our best discoveries!

Mine in Spain

>In Barcelona:
Gaudi's fantastic creations. Have you ever heard about the Parque Güell, la Sagrada Familia, la casa Batllo y la casa Mila? All those creations are the perfect mix of beauty and eccentricity.
La plaza d'España (the spain place) on spring evenings, with its fantastic fountain.
Las Ramblas, with its details everywhere.

>In Madrid:
La plaza Mayor,
The full fighting place in Madrid (la plaza de toros de las ventas), a symbol of Spain's culture,
La plaza Cibeles.

>Outside the city:
The windmills in  la Mancha, Don Quijote's "giants".
I heard a lot of good things about l'Alhambra in Granada... My spanish experience won't be complete without going to Andalucia!

If you're coming to Spain it's worth seeing those places!

Which are the best architectural beauties you have seen in your country?

There's plenty of architectural beauties, here in Prague, from Gothic style to Modernism/Functionalism through unique Cubist buildings in the whole world. They're some examples described in my (sorry UK speaking people, that's in FR). You may also find many of pretty pictures on the NetÂ…

I like interesting architecture, but I also love the small details most people passing by probably wont notice. i can strol through the part of the city I live in, looking at streets full of old small brick houses, and when you look closely you notice that all of them look different.

Not that I have travelled much in my life so far but here is my answer :

-the cute houses in the Dutch countryside,
-most of the buildings in London (Westminster, the Parliament,etc...)
-York Minster
-old building in general (cathedrals, old houses,...)

I can't think anything right now...

all the best

Urielle.

Well, I hate to say there isn't much I'm impressed with in Greece so far, aside from the ruins of course.  There is a building in Thessaloniki that I find a bit unique, I think my husband said it was a library.  The structure is very modern, it doesn't really fit in with the buildings all around it.  I guess that is why it stands out.

Which are the must see ruins in Athens / in Greece? (since I am young I am very keen on Greek history) :)

Well, of course the Parthenon/Acropolis area in Athens.  Delphi is also a great spot (where the oracle was).

The island of Kos has the Hippocratic Plane Tree (a tree that supposedly Hippocrates studied and taught under), and the Asklepion (the first hospital)

The village of Dion (around Mt. Olympus) has some nice temple ruins.

The remains of a Roman castle are in Thessaloniki, in the city center.

I have a friend who is a professor of Greek history, I'll have to get him to give me a more complete list.

Oh yea, on Sophokleas street, in Downtown Athens (near Omonia square) there are remains of the ancient Athenian wall and moat, and the road, that actually has carriage tracks on it!  The remains are underneath/around the National Bank of Greece building.

Hi everyone !

I just would like to say that I've been to Athens for holidays and I found the Parthenon/Acropolis amazing. I felt there a special feeling I had never experienced before. Usually I am not found of architecture but I would highly recommend that one for the beauty of the site and the marvellous view there over Athens.
Now I just want to go again, but it's quite far from Hong Kong now... ;)

Trouble

I think the whole reason I go to new countries is to see purty purty buildings.

Let's see.

In China, I fell in love with the Muslim Quarter of Xi'an.  I know we're supposed to go there for the Terracotta Warriors, which I did love, but walking through the gate of a wall that's thick enough for several cars to be parked in it is awe inspiring.

As for Edinburgh... hmm... The castle, of course.  I love the churches everywhere here.

But my true love is Lindisfarne's ruins.  Of which I have .

Hi,

in Italy there are plenty of churches in the historical centres ...
For example, in Lecce, in a 2 square km area, there are about 20 churches !! So when you arrive in Italy, you find them very beautiful ... but in every town you visit, there are churches, so at the end, you would like to see something else. However in the south of Italy and in Lecce, most of them are very beautifull... :D

Fortunately, there are beautiful natural "architecture" ... plenty beaches and very different from one to an other (white sand beach or rocks beach)
