Hi, I'm moving to China this December. I'll be working with Chevron, oil and gas company. please give me feedback about all information I need to know such as accomodation, tranportation and food. My company is offering free accomodation, mobile and transpo allowance. Food allowance is only USD 450 per month, will that be enough?
Also, I heard about difficulty in sending money back home. Is it true that expats are all only allowed to send maximum of USD 500 per day? I am a Filipino. What can you guys suggest so I won't have any problem in sending money home.Should I open a Chinabank account here in the Philippines.
Your feedback will be highly appreciate.Good day everyone!

Big cities cost more than small towns, but that should be more than enough for food.
If you have a Chinese bank on your home country, it might be very useful to open an account.
Hahaha!
You got one hell of a sweet package with Chevron. You have nothing to worry about! 450 a month in food is plentyÂ… You can eat like a king for less than 5 USD at any street vendor. 450 USD is plenty unless you plan to eat at the Ritz every day.
If you're able to send 500 USD per day to Manilla then a tip of the hat is in orderÂ… your fears are unfounded and Chevron's HR department should be able to solve any ignorance you have.
Inform yourself with the Bank of China branch in Manilla about sending money homeÂ…
What city in China will you be in when you arrive?

hi Kris, thanks for the feedback. I'm not exactly sure of the place yet, all I was told about is Chevron, (Unocal East China Sea, Ltd ) on the Chuandongbei project in Dazhou, Sichuan Province in China. Is this an isolated place do you know? Do you know any place to hangout during weekends? Any info about internet service in this area? What about transpo?
Thank you in advance for your reply.

All I can suggest at this point is start a new topic.... "Moving to Dazhou" Find out if anyone on this forum is there or has been there.
Honestly it sounds pretty remote. Google Map it! Sichuan is a central province. If you're lucky you're not too far from Chengdu which is a happening city.
Good luck

thanks for the advice Kris. I already made a new post. I hope to get more info about the place. By the way, is internet service difficult in China? Because I was told, China doesn't have unlimited net surfing. How much do you usually spend in a month, say you do skype and facebook everyday. thanks
Internet is easy & cheap, but a lot of sites will be blocked. Most people use a VPN or proxy.

thanks for the heads up! Now I know what to expect when I get there. but, could you be more specific about it when you said cheap, how much are we talking about per month just for an average user of social media, mail and youtube.

I paid 600 RMB ( less than 100 USD ) for one year of internet service and the VPN I'm using cost me 150 RMB ( abt 22 USD ) for the year to access everything beyond China's firewalls.
Oh you might want to get up to speed on your FB friends... changing countries, computer, etc. flags FB that you are possibly not the actual user of the account. Now FB in their infinite stupidity requires you to confirm who you are by showing a collection of photographs of your "friends"... If you fail to name them correctly you will be blocked from your FB account.

Thanks Kris for the detailed information. Oh yeah, I remember answering that security identification stuff when I was in the middle east too. Good thing I know all the people in my facebook friends list so that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks though for taking extra mile in explaining this.
Hi Kabayan,
Are you with Chevron now?
How was the On-boarding?
I will soon join the same project and I want to get some tips from your experience.
1. How is the accommodation arrange? is there a camp or you have to get your own accommodation?
2. How far on an avarage from worksite to city or camp?
3. Which department ka assign? ano work mo?
4. What is the nearest international Airport?
5. Are you on rotation? what is your shift schedule?
6. Any other tips that you can share ?
Salamat and keep in touch.
