Your tips for newcomers in Dhaka

Post new topic

expat.com

If you're living or have lived in Dhaka, which advice would you give to new expats?

We namely think of security: should any special precautions be taken (protection systems, areas to be avoided, etc.).

Do you have any particular advice regarding health: malaria is widely spread in the world, is it also in Bangladesh? Any other precautions to be taken?

Is tapwater safe in Dhaka? If not, what means are available on the market to make it drinkable?

These are just examples: if you have any other tip, please add it!

Your help is appreciated!

Prices on that link are out of date, and paint too rosy a picture.
Bangladesh is not a place for first time expats I would suggest, you need to be independent, and open to extremes of conditions, what you can buy, povety etc.
In terms of personal security, crime is on the rise, recently many strikes, where it is advised to stay at home due to the possibility of violence at these strikes.
Expatriate, muggings, theft, and murder increase. YOU NEED to be careful and vigilant.
Even walking the streets is not advised, the traffic gives you no attention, expect people driving the wrong way, driving on teh wrong side of teh road, cutting corners, if you walk and do not pay attention you will be hit, by either bus, truck, car, motorbike or rickshaw.
TB and malaria are prevalent, and you need to take care of your health.
Tapwater no way, veg needs to be washed completely, meat cooked fully.
I do not want to put people off but you need to be physically and mentally strong.
Most people are friendly, bit it is a dirty, smelly city, where life is cheap, nah, throw away.
It is a booming city and full of opportunities but go in with your eyes open

I will be moving to Dhaka in August of 2012. Is $30,000 a year enough to live on with a child?(12 yrs) I am concern because it seems so little and I am not sure. Apartment will be taken care of by the job and so will utilities. I keep having second thoughts because I keep hearing about the poverty. There must be some great things about Bangladesh. I really need to hear them.
Thanks a bunch!
