There is a wide range of different offers, each suiting to special categories of users: students, WHV travelers or even long settled expatriates. The main operators in Australia are Optus, Telstra and Vodafone.

If you come in Australia with a WHV or in an exchange program or even travelling, it might be interesting to choose a prepaid card. A prepaid card doesn't require any engagement and works with a Sim card you can recharge whenever you want with different amount.You only need to buy a Sim card and activate your prepaid number in the internet. A prepaid card/phone can be found in any post Office and in most supermarkets.

If you prefer SMS: Optus 30 $ Recharge: Unlimited text, free calls to Optus phones, Free access to social networks: Facebook, twitter, Linkedin, Ebay, etc.If you often make calls: Telstra 30$ AUD Recharge: Unlimited talk to any Australian number every night.
CAUTION Many phone operator require the phone to be recharged ever 30 days to keep the number.
If you just need to have an Australian number but don’t plan to make a big use of it: You can opt for the VODAFONE prepaid card from 20$. This card is valid for a full year and enables you to have an Australian number the whole year at very low rates.

If you are staying for a year or more, it can be interesting to subscribe to a plan, especially if you intend to have a professional or intense use of your phone. If you subscribe to a plan, you are bounded by a 12 to 24 engagement period with credit renewal every month.
