Soon in Amman for 6 months.

Just Sara

hello hello :)

this is Sara, Sudanese who grew up in 3 different countries ! well i'll be coming very soon (20 something of this month) to Jordan for a mission that will last 6 months , most of my time I'll be in Amman, with the possibility to move around too.
anyway I've some questions that i'll appreciate to know their answers before i'm there ..

1- cycling in Amman, is it ok for girls to cycle everywhere? i'm a bike lover actually and I would love to enjoy this during my stay there.

2- generally, do you consider living in Amman is expensive or no? well for me i'll have a place that's already paid, so I don't need to worry about this. but for example going out weekends for meals, clubs, smoking shisha ...etc.

3- weather in the coming period, I could see online that it's hot these days and may be it'll last longer, but how long will summer last ? winter is starting normally around which month?

4- any of you is couchsurfer here? It's just always interesting to meet with travellers and learn from them. :)

5- Asian restaurants, Precisely Japanese, Chinese, Indian.. Do we find them ?

thnxx for your help  ;)

Salut Sara :)

Welcome to Jordan! I wish you an interesting and rewarding stay in my homeland! Je parle le francais (pas tres mal aussi haha)

1- You can ride your bike in most places, but you sure wanna be on the lookout for traffic. We don't have bike lanes around here. You could rent/buy bicycles from Bike Rush/ Nader Bikes/ Cycling Jordan, but I'd recommend checking with a local/expat friend for a good deal on a second-hand bike.

2- Living cost depends entirely on your lifestyle! I've seen a guy living on 80 JD! Going/eating out, well, again it depends on where you go, but as far as going to clubs, girls get free entry and often free drinks in most clubs (guys almost always have to pay) an example of how extreme prices can vary depending on which area you go to, I go smoke Shisha and drink a cup of tea in an old, hidden cafe in downtown. I pay 3 JD for it, which includes endless supply of charcoal, mind you! Try to do the same thing in Abdoun (fancy neighborhood), You'd have to pay at least triple that!

3- Now, it's hot, dry and dusty! Summer usually ends around the end of October. Winter, in turn, starts in November. You can google this crap, you know :P

4- I am a couchsurfer! I urge you to meet fellow travelers/expats on CS. We used to have a Weekly CS meeting but it stopped recently. I'm thinking of resuming it once again soon. I met some really cool people through this platform. I'd be careful with local guys (including myself) in view of the recent murder of an American girl by the hands of her CS host in Nepal. Don't assume the good in people because while usually it is true, the one time you're wrong could cost your life. Also, the girls I met here in Amman have had a less-than-stellar experience with my fellow compatriots.

5- There a bunch of Japanese restaurants but most of them are crappy, look for online reviews first. You'll find both Chinese and Indian restaurants as well. Again, all of this is very googable!! I don't know if that's even a word :P

You're very welcome, ma'am ;)

Al_Berto

Coucou Sara :)

Oui, je sais que ma reponse etait super lol You probably won't get a better answer, but keep an open mind, it may happen haha Well, it's been the trend in the last couple of years that the CS meeting host happened to be non-Jordanian. So maybe you could host ;) I'd like to but I don't think I'm able to in the next few weeks.

Well, if you're going to be living, working or hanging out near downtown a lot, we should definitely meet. I'll introduce you to a couple of nice cafes. Or maybe one day you'd cook and invite me, I never say no to food (most of it anyway) :D

You could check Jordansun.com/events for things to do in Amman, I highly recommend BeAmman.com as well.

A bientot!

Hi Sara

The response on cycling in amman is absolutely right, there are no designated lanes so watch out for the traffic! I prefer to cycle on weekends, best days are fridays. Better yet, cycle out of town. We havent done than yet, but we'll do pretty soon, when the temperatures go down a notch lower :)

Bonne voyage!

Just Sara

Oooooh yes the websites are good good Sir hehe thanx again..
and sure we'll meet and many times, downtown, or a planned CS meeting or as u said I invite u for a meal, though I better tell u from now, love cooking doesn't mean I cook good :D
can't wait to be in Amman !

Just Sara

hello Nim, well i'll consider this advice of weekends cycling,, at least less traffic compared to weekdays apparently ^^
thanx and I hope u'll find it interesting to cycle outside the town :)
