Cockroaches.....

Post new topic

Ok, I lived in the S. Pacific for a year and developed a phobia of large cockroaches. I am told that geckos eat them. Besides that, what could I use to keep these horrid creatures away from me while I sleep. My biggest fear is having a a dream of one crawling on and and waking up to find that be the exact situation. This has happened before. God, I hate them....

I heard there is a "chalk stick" of some sort one may use that kills just about everything. I am looking for something stronger than boric acid. I short of poisoning myself, I need the strongest stuff possible. Thanks.

May I suggest an hammer?
Every time you see one, flatten it with a hammer.

Okay, to be very honest with you, as long you are living in the tropics you are going to have cockroaches. With that being said, there are some things you can do to lower the population around your house.
Keep in mind roaches have some things in common with people: They need food and water to survive and also, like people, they have a tendency to go where the supplies are plentiful and easily obtained. Therefore, keep food stored in sealed containers, keep crumbs cleaned-up, and keep water sources wiped-up (like around the sink). Roaches love grease, so keep your stove top clean. Rinse food residue off your disposables before putting them in the trash can. If it is possible to purchase and install a garbage disposal in Vietnam, I would highly recommend it. Otherwise, try to obtain a bucket with a tight lid on it for your biodegradable food waste (including coffee grounds - roaches like them too).
Glue traps are fairly inexpensive and actually work pretty good for roaches. I understand you want something stronger, but if you do use boric acid keep in mind it should be applied as an "invisible" dust (if the roaches see it, they will go around it).
Honestly, I am not scheduled to arrive in HCMC until mid-January and do not know what is available commercially there so I cannot really help you with the chemical poisons.
I worked three years with a nationwide pest control company in the US. I don't know everything, but I hope you will find some useful information here.

Cockroaches in my apartment often go sun tanning in the morning. They just lie there on the floor with their claws up waiting for me to pick them up and toss them over the balcony. They look like those xe om guys sleeping on their bikes waiting for the customers to come and wake them up.

I hate them too. We don't get many in our house but occasionally one will fly in or the cat will bring one in to play with.
What we do is hit them lightly with a fly swatter to stun them, then drop them into the aquarium where they wake up and start swimming around. It's not long after the fish see them and rip them apart. Nature at it's finest.....

You don't want a fat gecko....you want a starving gecko.

Sounds like he will get fat enough :P

Utterly vile...

What I meant was someone told me to stay in places with fat geckos. They've cleared out the area for you.
