Tips and advice to thrive in Norway

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hi,

When living in a foreign country, you have to adapt to a new environment, various cultures and different social codes.

How did you manage to adjust to Norway?

How long does it take to feel at home? Would you say it is an easy process?

According to you, what is key for a successful integration process in Norway?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience!

Please don't use this image for your post.
The extreme right party in Switzerland is using it for their campaign to expel "black ships" from Switzerland. This is really bad.

From my personal experience- learning the language will enable you to make friends quicker and blend in.
If you are not a sociable person by nature you may have to make an effort in Norway- because Norwegians are friendly but generally quite shy and reserved as well.

I felt that Norway is my home when I learned the language. The key to everything is learning Norwegian as soon as you can. Then, it would be easier for you to get friends, work and feel like you really belong. It took me a year and a half.

I feel like I understood the country and started to thrive when I started xc skiing in the winter. It makes the cold and dark much more bearable if you're outside exercising and appreciating the gorgeous nature here.

Oh and dont forget ...Young norwegians are fitness freaks and dog lovers. If you have problems making new friends.....just join your local gym ...or go jogging up in ekeberg park or along aker brygge pier. Joggers and dog walkers always share a special affinity.
As ECS rightly said..Norwegians are more sociable in natural/outdoor settings...like music festivals...skiing/boarding..etc
