Text messaging/email etiquette

Post new topic

Hi all,

I currently live in London but am in the process of arranging a job and accommodation in Malta, using email a lot.

Something I've noticed so far is that Maltese people seem to be slower responding to emails compared to people in London. Could anyone from the UK/Ireland please provide any insight on this? When people text one another socially in Malta is this the case too? Do people have a kind of 'manana' attitude with this as well?

Sorry for such an open ended question! I'm just trying to get an idea of whether people blanking me are being rude or whether my expectations are simply too high for a small relaxed island. I am not being critical, just trying to understand this side of the culture. I appreciate I'm asking for generalisatons to some extent and not everyone's the same etc.

Would really appreciate any help on this! :)

Maltese companies rarely reply to emails or when they do they are very slow responding.
Most of the websites are rarely updated and if you telephone and they say they will ring you back, they don't!

Its just customer service Maltese style.

You get used to it

Mostly if you want to find a job or accommodation in Malta, you need to be here, as the Maltese will not waste their time replying to someone who may never have been here or is looking to move in the next year or two, also Maltese applicants come first, followed by EU citizens and then TCNs
Before I retired to the islands and still lived in the UK I used to apply for jobs in the UK and never got the courtesy of a reply, it is no different here!

Thanks Terry, guess I shouldn't take it personally then!

With regards to general social contact (eg. with friends), are people quite reliable at texting back? The few individual Maltese people I've dealt with have been pretty prompt at replying and very helpful. Even the corporate people have been very prompt with responding once I've met them in person.

It just seems a bit strange given how slow the companies are. Thanks for any help.

They do seem to be more into social media, its just business orientated bits that get forgotten.
Once here you will realise that everything is slow.

Maltese are not like british, maybe more similar to sicily my homeland.
But in my personal experence, i've been replied very quick from maltese people, surely quicker then sicilian REAL SLOW people
