Moving to Nigeria with your family

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everybody,

When settling abroad with your spouse and children, the expatriation process requires an extensive preparation.

What are the considerations to take into account when moving to Nigeria with your family? What challenges have you faced? How did your children adapt to their new environment?

What is your recipe for a successful family expatriation in Nigeria?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Bhavna

The only major bad experience we had in Nigeria is the mentality of other expats in Nigeria. Many of them feel so superior especially when dealing with the locals. They really made us feel uneasy with their attitude. Then we left the exclusive expat community and started associating with the locals and everything was fine. But it's still important to be extremely careful when choosing those we associate with.

Things to consider before relocating  to  Nigeria:

1.Know the current money exchange
2.Know the basic laws of Nigeria (it will benefit you dearly)
3. Get a trusted and reliable reference from other expats who have worked with the Local people around your area  to get a decent house/apartment , car, etc..
4. Do some research on the basic customs of the people around you
5.Research your schools and contact them for more information  on the curriculum  and credibility .
6. Have patience  because  things are a bit slower with paper work and getting basic things done
7. Know how much items cost when going to the local market ( they will try to charge extra for  things)
8. Have a good attitude  in general and try to understand  where  the locals are  coming from because  somethings it may not make sense  to you.
9. Look into activities  for the  family. They have  so many things to do here  plus have expats clubs to join, etc..
10. Lastly ,  remember  to be respectful of the local people ,  you are a visitor  in their country .

Hallo, Thanx for that.

How much would a good salary be per month to survive on comfortably?

Well, it depends on how big your family is  and where  you plan to live.
