I am in the process of interviewing for a job in Nairobi and I'm excited about the possibility. I lived for over a decade in Southeast Asia where I taught at the international. I met my wife when I was teaching in Indonesia but I've lived in the United States in the past 12 years. I am currently an English professor at a State University in Pennsylvania and I'm looking to teach in Kenya for my sabbatical. I am so ready to live abroad again and I'm thrilled for this opportunity! I have only visited Rwanda and South Africa so I don't know exactly how Nairobi will compare and so I welcome anyone else's advice. I look forward to meeting other Kindred Spirits here!
Hello Tim,
Life is a bit slow in Nairobi, the traffic jams are epic and safety issues are dampners but the weather is awesome and the people are very warm and helpful! If you have a job which pays well, you will have a great life here. I am a month old in Nairobi and trying to explore the city, liking it well.
Karibu (Welcome) Kenya
Hi.
Our family (me, human spouse, and 2 cats) plan to relocate to Nairobi this summer. I am super excited because I used to live in Nairobi in 1970s. We will be posted for 2 to 3 years.
My only worry is how to import our cats. There is no direct flight from Japan, and, I am already freaked out with the procedures.
I look forward to the day when we arrive!
Hi,
We also brought our dog with us and I know how tedious the process is and full of anxieties and then our dog is a fussy eater, will starve but not eat !!! We took a flight that had one stop over at ADD, you could look for a flight that has least stop overs. If your cats eat, then you could leave enough food for them in the carriage and they will be fine. Make sure they travel in the same aircraft which we did and also ensure that the pilot knows that there is live cargo and temperature and air pressure needs to be controlled. Rest should be ok. Releasing them from the airport cargo section is another long process. Wish you all a safe journey.
Best Wishes
Dear Kakoli
Thank you so much! I am more worried about my cats than me or my husband...
I have no problem getting the vaccination and health certificates on Japan side, but my concern is the requirements in Kenya, especially
"A certificate from the Captain of the ship or aircraft in which the animal travelled to Kenya certifying that the animal has not left the craft between the place of embarkation and the place of entry into Kenya, and has been isolated from all other dogs and cats throughout the journey ."
Did you obtain such certificate from the airline you used? If so, how?
Please let me know how you released them from the airport cargo section-I am so happy for you that you were safely reunited.
Thank you so much. You made me less anxious...
Tazuko
Hi Tazuko,
The certificate is not a big issue, they do not generally insist on it because they are aware of how many other dogs and cats or any other animal is travelling in the same aircraft. Generally there is not more than one live pet on board. Also if you have all the papers ready, it should be fine, only that we just kept going back and forth and it looked like a lot of time on a hot sunny day. Have you got a place yet where you will be staying? Are you coming on a work permit? I was working back in India and used to a very busy life, am getting thoroughly bored here.
Best wishes
Kakoli
