Naturalisation and citizenship in Tanzania

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

What are the requirements for acquiring citizenship in Tanzania? For example, length of residence, language requirements, employment etc..

What formalities are involved in the process?

What is the policy on dual-citizenship in Tanzania? Do you have to give up your former nationality?

What are the advantages and benefits of acquiring Tanzanian citizenship, in your opinion?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Hi Bhavna,
The current constitution in Tanzania does not allow dual nationality so this means you have denounce your nationality.
The condition include
1.having lived/resided in the country for not less than 10 years
2. Fluency in Swahili speaking
3. Denouncing your nationality

Upon satisfaction of conditions 1 and 2 you can then apply and you will fill a bunch of forms including those for denouncing your nationality.

Your application will be processed and if accepted you will pay a fee (currently USD 5,000), then your request will be advertised in the national newspaper for 2 weeks to call upon any objections and if none the minister will sign your naturalization certificate and voila.

You get a lot of benefits much better than non citizens. All government services are charged in USD for non citizen which is more than double the amount charged on citizens. As a non citizen you cannot get the National health insurance which is the cheapest. In universities the fees are charged differently on non citizens.

If you plan the rest of your life in Tanzania and don't border much about your origins you should get Tanzania citizenship. Many Indians have done this and they live just as any other Tanzania without questions

All mentioned with others before are correct but one thing good news to you is that Tanzania is a welcoming country and has no many barriers for foreigners to have their permanent settlement though they are not the citizens. You can live and work in Tanzania peacefully for the rest of your life without being a citizen just by following the rules of the country which are friendly for everyone who want to immigrant to Tanzania.Well come to Tanzania.

You can't denounce a citizenship of one country to an official of a second country unless your country specifically states you can do so. So it will be up to your  government and its laws. What is the process of renouncing or losing your citizenship in your country? In practice, many people in Tanzania including politicians, prominent business people, and regular people have citizenship of other countries along with their Tanzanian citizenship. Many prominent people including politicians send their pregnant wives to give birth in countries with automatic citizenship for a newborn such as the US.
