Traveling with dog

Post new topic

I'm having to go through what it takes to get my dog checked out ahead of time by my vet, he fills out an online form not more than 10 days ahead of departure.

Next issue is that the Airline I'm looking at will not put dogs in cargo any longer so much be classified as a 'Support Animal'.

Oh well.  Doggie Downers it is!

Only winter season for cargo dogs... I gave up trying... 80F or something
They stay here - no more back/forth

WestJet is the best dog carrier

The exit vet papers are easy....  not to worry

Hi, Bob. Does DR recognize service animals? We are staying at a resort in Punta Cana and haven't been able to get a straight answer about bringing a medical service dog with us.

Thank you!

I have looked at WestJet information on bringing dogs back to Canada. And I am a little confused about whether I can or not. I have 60lb Dominican dog that has been with us for 4+ years. And we wanted to take him back to Canada with us. Is it possible and how do we go about this? I do realize that it would probably be in cargo and only during certain months.

Not really.  I have a certified service dog. We have lived in Cabarete and Samana (quite rural) and they don't seem to have any idea about service dogs (mascotas de ayuda) unless you really explain the concept to them.  Stores resist letting mine in and landlords are clueless ( although an interpretation of the DR disability statute seems to contemplate mandating access to residences if you have one).

They are not recognized here. We are behind the times.

@Cikris  there id lots of Information on the government of DR website for traveling with animals. We took our service dog with no issues.

bring your service dog papers  and cutter certificate of health for your service animal that you obtained from your vet. Less than  30 days prior to your flight. At the airport in DR you will meet with animal control and papers will be reviewed and Stamped. I think the cost is 20 usd,

Thank you, everyone. We have already done the paperwork and have airline approval. My only concern is the resort as they are not "pet" friendly and I can't seem to get them to understand or reply that he's not a "pet". We took him to aruba last year and it was so much easier/clear.

Again they really don't recognize service animals. To them it's a pet. Good luck trying to get the resort

@Cikris.....Not all resorts accept animals so your best bet is to check with the resort before booking. You recognize your dog as a service animal but you can't assume a resort will welcome the dog regardless of where you're traveling. I own a travel agency and have many clients ask about bringing animals to resorts. Bottom line is that the resorts have their policies and I would never put one dollar down on a reservation until I check those policies and have it in writing. Aruba may have accepted the dog at the resort you travelled to but not every resort in Aruba accepts animals either. And, just like so many other things, over the years people have taken advantage of the "service animal" concept which has resulted in airlines, hotels, resorts, etc., tightening their policies/restrictions to the point where they don't allow ANY animals unfortunately.

Hi community, i am thinking a traveling with my shepherd for an extended stay with friends there later this year (2024). i am wondering if anything has changed regarding pet transport  since these posts? Alot has changed globally since 2018. Thank you for any advice, if you are still on here!

Also are there any dog safe, reliable kennels in Santo DDomingo?

Thanks!

Be sure you are aware of the rules for taking your dog back to the US from here. While these are set to expire 7/31/24, they have been extended several times already, and I would plan on there being another extension.
