choosing an avatar - photo or cartoon

Post new topic

logger

thirst, for those of you unfamiliar with the term, an avatar is that image at top left of this post.  its your chance to project yourself visually on this forum.  the rest is all words, you know what they say about a picture, so this is important

if they do anything at all, most people are quite literal and choose a photo of themselves, or if they are bad, a picture of someone else.  that leaves those who dont care or dont know, and a few oddballs who take the figurative approach and use a cartoon

personally i have no objection to photos, especially if youre young and beautiful, but for us oldies, discretion and anonymity is the order of the day.  thats why, when someone asked about a pic, i decided cartoon was the better part of valor

for all you out there labouring under standard gender assigned avatars(blue or pink stick creature cartoons, not sure where fluffys avatar fits) how about giving yourself a new web forum persona ?  if you dont have a suitable photo, its easy enough to find a cartoon on the web using google images

think about how you want to portray yourself in terms of your personality, interests and obsessions, then summarise your conclusions into a couple keywords you can slot into a search engine, and hey presto the images are summoned.  once you latch onto the right keywords, youre pretty much home and dry, only problem is deciding which cartoon you want to use.

first i tried logging as keyword, but all it gave me was a lot of boring photos of trees logs and lumberjacks, i can see those any time i want in the woods.  the breakthough came using the word chainsaw, apart from photos of some extremely fit women posing with chainsaws, it also supplied a variety of potential cartoons for my forum persona

not sure im 100% satisfied with what i decided on, but you have to start somewhere, dont you ?

let me know what you think

Julie

Ah, well, mine is somewhat obscure but those geeks amongst us may recognise it.

It's the point of origin symbol for Earth. These are symbols used as gate dialling codes in Stargate SG-1, which as every nerd should know was (and is) an excellent sci-fi series.

The symbol represents the sun rising over a pyramid (as that is where the original Stargate was found in Giza, Egypt).

There's no real deep symbolism. I guess I'm just saying I'm an earthling who likes sci-fi!

what with all these gate dialling codes, you must be another one of those telecoms engineers, fluffy

My (lack of) avatar represents my focus on the content :-)
It also saves bandwidth.

Logger, your cartoon dude is holding the chainsaw wrong, and violates multiple other critical safety precautions :-)

Fluffy, I was sure it must be a SG glyph, but didn't know the significance.

That's better logger, much less Texas chainsaw massacre, now more oops, I've got no fingers :)

ps, somehow my avatar's managed to change itself...taken NYE 2010/11 after much alcohol :)

Ah, not quite but been telecoms, done that, got the T-shirt.

To outsiders, I probably have an unusual job but essentially I'm an aid worker albeit of the IT kind.

I'm the kind of bloke who will get called to go into Libya when they've formed a government post-Gadaffyduck, started a reconstruction/reform project and need help to get their IT working/modernised.

Hmmmm...some parallels with the Stargate life I aspire too. Odd places, dodgy IT, food replicators out of action, engines not working, stabilisers and anti-grav non-functional, often daily life for me.

But at least I'm not the Star Trek security man in the red T-shirt who never makes it back to the mothership.

check my latest rendering, much more satisfied with this action portrait showing off my full complement of chainsaws

sod safety regulations and bandwidth, no one messes with my forum persona ;)

yep beginners 101, im a primitive, cutting ice sculpture is one thing, but keeping 5 chainsaws in the air at the same time, now thats damien hirst

note of caution for the safety conscious, most logging accidents arent caused by chainsaw wounds.  sure you have to careful about kickback, to avoid decorating your forehead, but  its really in the way the tree falls.  used to know one of the good ole boys from north carolina, broke his little daughters arm when the tree he was cutting fell the wrong way.  nearly brained myself a couple times with falling trees.  the way i work it now when i feel a bout of loggin coming on, is have the trees delivered to my doorstop in symmetric log loads.  that way I can cut them horizontally, leave the vertical stuff to the professionals.  weekend loggers out on your wood plot, be warned.

strictly on topic, szocske, theres a lot of us out here would love to see your avatar.  its not every day you have a volunteer fireman on your doorstep, so to speak (unless you start the fire yourself)  me thinks these protests about bandwidth are a smokescreen

did you lose too many fingers to try Juliens ctrl F5 suggestion for your new avatar, or are you just happy the way you look ?
