Howdy, everyone...

TUSK

I'm from the woods in rural Alabama and am considering expat locales within the Caribbean.

Formerly a white collar worker (ACC, IT, FIN, consulting, etc), I've recently transitioned in to construction (self-employed).

I'm self-sufficient, adaptive, single (no children), but NOT very well traveled:(

I like intelligent conversation, big dogs, the number '5', and beer!...  I'm also witty and "random", at times...

Peace!

Monkey Town brew

Hey! Welcome to the forum! We are also (obviously) big beer lovers too. If you love beer variety, you should know there's not much here. We brew our own beer and wine and would love to start a microbrew some day. Feel free to message me if you want more on the beer lowdown!

Hi, where in AL.  My uncle lives in Fairhope and for one year I lived in Daphne to check on him (he has dementia).  My mother's family is from Mobile and she was raised on a farm outside Grove Hill.  Sound familiar?  Anyway, my husband died in Jan. and now I am off on my new adventure of moving to Belize to live with my two small dogs.  I'm going down in Oct. to check things out and many people on several forums and many books about retiring abroad have helped.  I am no stranger to traveling with Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, and lived in HI, plus seven U.S. states.  I do like to travel, but my husband was a commercial pilot and I could never match his worldwide travel experiences.  Now it is my time...Welcome!

Thanks so much, Monkey Brew!

I do not have eclectic taste regarding beer, but I'm willing to try!!!!

I grew up and live about 50 miles west of Tuscaloosa, AL...  In the sticks!

Other than my time in the Marine Corps, I traveled very little...  moved around a good bit, but not very far...

My daddy passed away not terribly long ago from ALZ/DEM...  that's a difficult experience...  also, I'm sorry for your loss...

I've been looking at the Stanns Creek and Corozal districts in BZE as well and Mexico and Honduras....

I'm very familiar with aspects of construction, remodel, etc, so my thoughts were building on raw land or maybe getting a "fixer upper" if it was a GREAT deal....

In short, I'm clueless :/

(forgive the choppy sentence structure and abuse of ellipses...  it's how I roll)

Welcome to the forum!  I am a Clevelander that purchased land in Corozal last year.  I have house plans and am interviewing builders.  Will be building sometime at the end of 2018.  Awaiting power lines to be brought back to the road.  Practicing realtor hoping to transition to Belize from the harsh winters here where I currently reside.

Best,

Diana

Hi, Diane!

Please keep me up to date on the process of the "builder hiring" process...

I'm very interested in how the cost of materials and labor intersect with time and quality of construction...

Take care,

Glenn

ABSOLUTELY! Go to Belize and stay for a few weeks or months. You will either love it or hate it. I've never met anyone that fell in between.  Personally, I'm from a little town in South Missouri where there was about 317 people. I'm in my early 50's and had an outhouse until I was 14. Spent most of my time in the woods as a kid and own a small goat farm now here in the states. I want to move to Belize so badly that I am forced to visit once a year or so in order to not drive people around me nuts. Its an AMAZING place for a country girl.

As for spending $40,000 a year; that is entirely possible. Corn flakes are $10 a box and gas is $10 or more a gallon. But when you are willing to alter your lifestyle for the experience, amazing things happen. Taco girl has a blog that periodically gives the costs of things there in comparison to the US and Canada and there are lots of websites that do a small, medium, large budget comparisons.

My personal experience is that the fresh fruits and vegetables (do not expect what you get in the states), the endless supply of rice and bean recipes and the gorgeous scenery and the great Belizean people make the sacrifices of corn flakes (and other unnecessary luxuries) well worth the trade off. Believe it or not most people can live comfortably there for under $40,000 with a few adjustments.

Good luck and feel free to contact me privately if you would like. Next time I'm in town I will buy you a Belikin!

Sweet!  I sent you a "friend" request...  I think....

Take care,
