Hello!!

I'm craving southern fried chicken and corn bread and both recipes call for buttermilk!! Anyone know where I can find it in Rome? Or what its called in Italian?

Grazie!

As far as I know there's no such thing. It's called siero di latte, but I've never been able to get it. I substitute buttermilk with the same amount of yogurt with a little lemon squeezed in and left to sit for an hour or so... works okay for cornbread. You can also make buttermilk with milk and cream of tartar but you need to get that in the US too, it just lasts forever so it's a good substitute. Good luck!

Hi Neeya - I make American-style cakes here in Milan, and for buttermilk I use latte intero with fresh squeezed lemon juice. Place 2 tablespoons lemon juice in a liquid measuring cup and add milk to make 240ml (or 1 cup, if you have American standard measuring cups) of buttermilk. Let stand for 10 minutes and you're all set. You never have to buy buttermilk even if it were available. Happy cooking!

It is called latticello in Italian and you should be able to find it in organic food shops .'Albero del Pane' ,Via Arenula and Canestro in Via Gorizia.Or find a recipe on Internet and make it yourself.
