Medication and cost of living in KL

Post new topic

Hi, dear people living in Kuala Lumpur!
I am from Colombia and I was offered a position in KL. The salary is 3700 RM.
Is this amount enough to cover the basic needs (transportation, food, room rent, etc) and to save some money to travel to the surrounding countries (Thailand, Cambodia))?
I also would like to know, is it easy to get psyquiatric meds in KL? I take valproic acid and risperidone. Can I easily get with the prescription of my Colombian doctor translated into English or do I need to get a doctor from there that prescribes me the medication?
Thank you for your time and answers :)

The salary is too low to allow anything more than living as a student. You will need to contact pharmacies direct to check on the meds that are available in Malaysia. The style of prescribing can be very different and not all prescriptions can be filled here. In fact your doctor could help you do this. There will be generic or other meds available if the exact ones are not supplied.

You need a prescription from a Malaysian registered doctor to get a pharmacy to fill a prescription, but you can also bring in a personal supply (not excessive amounts though). Because of the nature of your meds and baggage searches when travelling it would be wise to get the type and function of the meds described and endorsed by a local doctor and possibly a Notary Public - so you don't run into illegal trafficking of substances.  It is stressful moving country so do be well prepared.

You can check COL at Expatistan and Numbeo. Rent and utilities will probably take up about half of your income. If you have not yet received confirmation from immigration that your recruitment has the green light, don't make too many plans. This is because immigration only approves foreigners for positions where there are no skills available locally. Sometimes companies are too quick to offer jobs and then applications are turned down by immigration for various reasons.

Agree. You probably won't save any money at all with such a salary. You will most likely have to share a place or rent a room, and unlikely be able to travel. Sorry.

Thank you so much for taking your time to answer my question. Well, the company needs people who speaks Spanish and that's why they chose me... On the other hand, I was planning to rent a room to save money (I did that when I lived in Kolkata but I'm aware that the cost of living is higher in KL, of course) but if the salary is not enough to travel a bit it will be preferable to look for other opportunities. Again, thank you so much!

To be honest, RM3700 won't get you far if you need to pay for your own accommodation, transport and medication. Did they mention about paying for your mobile or will they get you insurance with your expat package? Do you know which part of KL will you be in?

Having said that, traveling and working overseas is great. You'd manage, but you just won't save very much.
