Moving To Norway

Post new topic

Hi All,
I have got an offer from a software company in Oslo for 675,000 NOK. I am not sure if this amount is decent enough to live and save in Norway. I love travelling, so I do want to spend on it, but this salary figure, does it guarantee a decent lifestyle.

Also, what are the tax slabs for expats in Norway.

I will be moving in August, so what kind of climate can I expect on my arrival.

Thanks & Regards,
Ashu Saxena

Hi Ashu Saxena,

Welcome to the forum.

Have a look at this website for cost of living : and read The taxation system in Norway article to know more about taxes.

For the weather, in due time, you can just google it. It's summer in August.

All the best,
Bhavna

it depends a lot on what you define as a good lifestyle. With a similar salary I was affording to rent a small apartment on my own in one of the best neighborhoods right behind slottsparken, dining out occasionally, plenty of travel domestically and in Europe, gym membership, and save enough for a big down payment when I finally bought in the center. I didn't do much in the way of nightlife and drinking though, which will quickly burn money in this city! I also didn't own a car, another big expense here.

Basically, I would say at that salary you can expect a pretty worry free existence if you have reasonable expectations for life in Oslo.

Thanks for such an emotional and detailed reply. I think my lifestyle is quite similar to what you just mentioned (hence an emotional reply for me), so I believe it would be quite a fun in Oslo.
Just one more query on the same notes, if car expenses are high what are the usual means of transport across Norway/Sweden that you opt for.

Thanks Bhavna, this is good information. I got to know from my company that there is a tax rebate for first two years. Do you have any information on that, as I am not able to find anything reasonable on internet yet.

Depends on why you're crossing the border. There are trains to places like göteborg, and if you want to shop there are "Harry tour" buses. Or friends with cars who will share fuel costs.

But now my husband has a car so we do just drive.

Hey, so how hard it is to get a driving permit in Norway.

ECS

do you have any license at all? It's definitely one of the stricter countries, and getting a license from scratch is very expensive, requiring theory hours, several hours of driving time with a licensed instructor, special extension driving lessons (for icy conditions and night time driving), and an exam.

if you already hold a license from another country, here's information:

if you're starting from scratch, here's information:
