Suggestions on a reasonably affordable neighborhood with a new upscale building lived in only by expats and no airbnb or short term lets? And near public transport. Somewhere over the rainbow, you say?

I live near Phrom Phong BTS Skytrain station, on the Sukhumvit Line in Khlong Toei District, Bangkok, Thailand. The area has 2 upscale malls at BTS station with 2 movie theaters, numerous restaurants, & shops, gourmet food stores and everything one needs without having to drive. There are many upscale high-rise buildings in the area, some new and some old. Rents in area range between 25k to 120k and higher. My building, The Waterford Diamond Tower, is 46 floors and 20 yrs old. It has the best state-of-the-art fitness center in the area and has 2 pools. The rent starts at 25k for 1 bed, 30k to 35k for 2 beds and 45k to 60k for 3 beds. It's only a 5 to 10 min walk to everything so you don 't need a vehicle or scooter. There are not many bars in the area, mostly restaurant & hotel bars. The nightlife area (Soi Cowboy's) is only one Skytrain station away at Asoke (cost 16 THB on sky train). If you're looking at moving to Bangkok, this is a very nice area. The views of the city from my balcony are beautiful at night. Kindly...

Thank you, Zeus, for your thoughtful and detailed advice. Will definitely check it out on next visit. Do you know if there's any street food within walking distance?

Hmmm....the Waterford Diamond Tower is a short let building listed on lodging web sites. I want to avoid that for a lot of reasons. But otherwise sounded great. I will check out the area though in my next visit. Thanks!

It's no longer a short let building... they stopped sometime last year when a new company took over. Some owners may still rent on their own, but they are in violation of Condo regulations and there are signs are up everywhere that it's no longer allowed and to report anyone who is suspected of leasing short term. Also, only the long-term renters thru the company can use the fitness center & pool. The Phrom Phong area is upscale and very nice. There's street food vendors within a 5 min walk in either direction. Just so you understand, I'm not trying to sell this building to you or anyone else. Most of the buildings I looked at in this area were 60k to 120k per month for 2 beds and I didn't want to pay that kind of rent when I didn't need to... Good luck...

Hello again, Zeus. I will be looking for an apartment in BKK the end of November. Do you have any contact info for a managing agent (or whoever) handling your building? Thanks!

(P.S. What do expats do for Thanksgiving in BKK?)

VP Assets is the company that leases in the Waterford Diamond Tower at acc@waterford.co.th.
Nothing special for Thanksgiving, but you can find some hotels with Thanksgiving type lunch & dinner specials. Good luck...

Hi Zeus - A question that will be obvious to you but mysterious to me from afar. What's the difference - is it legal, practical, locational, or aesthetic??? - between Waterford Diamond Tower and Waterford Sukhumvit 50? The latter still seems to have short lets. Is the Capital Resort part of Waterford Sukhumvit 50? I'm starting to feel a bit like country gal in the big city. Thx.

The Waterford Diamond Tower is 46 floors on Sukhumvit 30/1. The Capital Sukhumvit 30/1 is 8 floors next door to the Diamond Tower on same street. I stay in the Tower.

The Waterford Sukhumvit 50 and Capital Resort are different condos located on Sukhumvit 50. I don't know anything about them.

Take a look at Sukhumvit 38... a quiet dead end Soi near Thonglor BTS...
