The sponsor problem is tricky for most people. All I can suggest is canvassing your current friends to find out if they know anyone living in Sarawak, or go there and make some new friends pronto.

No I am not looking for anything free. I am happy to pay a reasonable honorarium to a local person  who will be willing to support my application. As you all know this sponsorship doesn't require to pay anything to the authority, just a formality. So would appreciate any help in this matter as Im stuck here.

All my friends are in KL or George Town and unfortunately they don't have much connections in Sarawak!!

Have you thought about asking your landlord if they have any contacts, if you're already renting a place in Malaysia? They have a vested interest in your being able to remain.

Good idea...non-Sarawakian Malaysians may know Sarawakians that could act as a sponsor. I have heard that there seems to be an issue with Sarawak Immigration with Sarawakians who are not "resident" in Sarawak. I don't know why that is...and a non-resident Sarawakian seems to be within the "letter of the law".

But reference to a Sarawakian or Permanent Resident residing in Sarawak seems to be what they want.

Thanks all for your reply. Yes I am working on those channels to see if I can find someone to be my sponsor, but so far no luck. I will continue to search however if you guys have any contact or channel please let me know and I will be grateful. I have no issue to pay someone a honorarium for their service.

By the way is there any restrictions of living elsewhere in Malaysia with Sarawak MM2H visa? ie, 90 days or 6 moths etc, because someone was telling me with Sarawak visa you can only stay up to 90 days in other states?

You've got it precisely backwards. Peninsular MM2H visa holders get 90-days in East Malaysia (because they'll be stamped in as a tourist).

But Sarawak M2H holders can stay in West Malaysia an unlimited period of time (well at least until their MM2H visa runs out. They can even live there.  See #4


Technically, I don't see any issue with a Peninsular MM2H participant in actually living in Sarawak provided they could find a landlord willing to lease to them. I told my landlord I was applying for Sarawak MM2H and he gave me a two year lease.

There are people who are "visa hopping" with lease commitments.  That's riskier but it's up to the parties involved. I suspect there is something about the deposit being lost.

Let's say one had an  Peninsular MM2H and decided..."I prefer Kuching". Then even if the 90-day rule above applied,  you'd just have to go to KL or Penang or Kota Kinabalu for a week and return. In a practical sense I don't think there is any real barrier once you have an MM2H...provided you are willing to travel a little within Malaysia.

They are misinformed. You can live anywhere in West Malaysia or Sarawak without restriction for the duration of your LTSVP (usually five years). You cannot live in Sabah but you can visit.

That said, It's going to be harder to find a sponsor if you don't spend time in Sarawak making contacts.

And I know of a lot of people now applying that intend to still live on the Peninsula because the Peninsula is clamping down on "visa hopping".

That's backing up the system for people who actually want to live in Sarawak. At some point they are likely to clamp down on people applying and staying in the Peninsula and require that people actually reside in Sarawak.

yeah you are right. it was one of the agent in KL try to pursue me to use their services by telling the opposite!!

It depends on their nationality. Most Westerners would get 90 days. It's the same as if you're entering from a foreign country. Even native West Malaysians only get 90 days in Sabah (or Sarawak) I believe.

My visa stamps have the following wording " Malaysia Immigration K.L. International...Permitted to re-enter West Malaysia and Sabah and remain until 29/01/2013"   and " Malaysia Immigration Kuching...Permitted to re-enter Sarawak/ Malaysia and remain until 30/01/2013."  Odd that day differential...MM2H visa states 30/01/2013.

But it's clear from the stamps that I could stay anywhere on my Sarawak M2H.

I have heard that Sabah is not ISSUING a Sabah MM2H unless one resides in Sabah...but that is a different issue.

You meant 2023, of course.
In that case I imagine West Malaysians are permitted to stay in Sabah/Sarawak as long as they like, but maybe have to get a permit if they want to work there.

My MM2H is Sarawak. It seems I can stay anywhere in Malaysia through the term of my visa.

But the way I see it is that West Malaysians cannot stay in Sarawak or Sabah more than 90 Days. They are treated much like Western tourists. They are barred from working in these States without a work permit.

The MM2H holders from the Peninsula would likely get only a 90-day pass upon entering Sarawak or Sabah also. They could go in-and out- of Sarawak/Sabah (either back to the Peninsula or to, say, Singapore). They could reside in Sarawak (or Sabah) as long as the landlord agreed. Some landlords might not. But having an actual MM2H would probably allay their concerns.

But overstaying in Sarawak might result in a very paradoxical situation where one violated the terms of the entry pass to Sarawak. Would it get you red-flagged for Sarawak alone, or all of Malaysia??? Not something I would want to "test".
