Moving to KL from Switzerland, Salary question

Post new topic

arrdhasan

After living 10 years in Switzerland, I am considering an option to move to KL  ( For personal reasons ) with my wife and 4 year old boy.  So lot of questions comes in my mind but the main ones are about the salary and cost of living.

I am an IT manager  earning  approx 200K CHF per annum, which equals to 198 KUSD per annum.

Is it fair to expect at least 50K MYR ( 12K USD) per month as a salary in KL ? or would this be a too much of expectation?

There are lots of Salary Surveys which can be found online that can give you an idea of salaries in Malaysia.

Your salary expectations are rather high and probably unattainable. Half what you expect is probably more realistic. But a lot depends on what you mean by being an IT Manager.

The main area for foreigners to work in Malaysia in IT is as software engineers.  Malaysia has a protectionist employment policy which means if a local can do the job then foreigners can't be employed as immigration will not approve a work visa.

Usually managerial jobs with supervisory or budgetary responsibility cannot be done by foreigners. But consultancy or advisory roles are possible.

First step will be to check whether your qualifications are recognised in Malaysia

Thanks @gravitas for your answer. Much appreciated.

the visa/immigration stuff will be taken care by the company so i am least bother about it at this point of time.

The biggest question mark is around the quality of life with the associated salary. If i cannot demand or get the same salary ( or at least 80 %)  as in Switzerland, i would not even think about moving to KL.

Employers don't have any say in the immigration process and have to conform to the prevailing rules. Lots of people think that a company has some clout to insist an employment pass is approved but it is not the case. I've heard some remarkable stories of individuals writing their own Job Descriptions only to find the duties included can't be done by foreigners. Their thinking is opposite to reality which is the more senior the less likely is approval.

I did check a salary survey but sometimes Glassdoor shows ranges. Generally speaking salaries are low in Malaysia because of the level of Cost of Living.

In the case of secondments within a company, immigration rarely issue employment passes and prefer to approve only Professional Visit Passes. In that case no dependents can obtain passes to accompany the spouse.

All in all, this government has put a tight squeeze on foreign employment. But in your case unattractive salaries will probably be the key.
