Moving to Vietnam but building a houseboat????

Post new topic

Just_another_mark

Hi All

So here’s one for you

I’m aware of all the details and issues with moving to Vietnam and buying property or a business etc but what I was thinking about doing  was moving to Vietnam for a while and while I’m there building a pontoon house boat to eventually live on

Even two, as I’d like to Airbnb one to help sustain myself while I am there.

I’d be packing the materials here in shipping containers and then building Vietnam side. I’ve researched all this part just as a hobby/thought, but I know nothing of what may happen the other side.

I’m wondering has anyone ever heard of this?

Has anyone bought a house boat in Ha Long Bay ?

Are there any legalities involved?

What are your opinions? Constructive and well thought only please 🤦ðŸ»â€â™‚ï¸

Cheers guys

Just rambling but as a previous homebuilt boat builder myself I thought about this (not to do myself, just my typical wondering about things) and the conclusion I came up with was since labor and materials are so cheap here if it hasn't been done already there must be an issue with it.  The waters would be filled with people doing the same.

I just can’t find anything to give an issue though

I know a lot of houses are being built on kind on floatation pontoons because of flooding etc

But actually can’t find anything else to show why I can’t. So annoying

Oh, one with panorama windows like in my house in CA. - Just the insurance and getting approval will be tough as an ingrown toenail.

But I would not import materials. Ask me, why!

Just_another_mark

Um why??? 😂

I was only think of ease. Building a kit. Test build dismantle and pack.especially for the pontoon and protection cage) The pontoon sections I can source are first class and can potentially mount an OBM and the rest I was thinking Glass.

YEAH was genuinely thinking each wall length and width bifold doors or fixed glass. See picture

I’m sure I have my head in the clouds but a boat is a boat. If you are sailing or moving around and living on it like anywhere in the world, surely this is the same thing.

Not sure what government agency you would contact for water usage since it'll be on the water. You'll have an issue with power/water/sewer/sanitation,... Don't think most BnB people will want to rough it and pee/poop into the water or pollute the water with dirty water. It's not the US where you can drive your camper to get the sewage pumped out.

Just_another_mark

Yeah I get you

You’d be surprised what some people would go through to have a little luxury on the sea in those beautiful areas I bet, next best thing to a stilt hut in the Maldives 😂😂

-Waste I was thinking composting toilet

-Inline heating for instant hot water

-Water for shower and sink held in flat water container in wall or a water container on roof.

-Shower and sink water was thinking a grey waste container held as one of the pontoon floats

-Power I was thinking 4/6 solar cells and a small generator. Very minimal power out put as

I’m also now just realising that I’m going to need some sort of certification or license to be in charge of a “vesselâ€

I’ve also emailed the British embassy in Hanoi to ask a few questions. I’ll wait to find out I guess

Hi,
Your plan has merits, however I will just identify a few points for your consideration as the boat building and lifestyle dream has caught many off guard leading to shattered dreams and empty back accounts...…..and this is in our own country so to take on your plan in Vietnam will be fraught with anguish, but please do not take this as a dream crusher response.
I have been involved in the commercial shipbuilding industry in Vietnam for many years and you can be rest assured you will drown in red tape and beauracratic headaches from the get go. Your vessel will be considered as a commercial vessel and will need to meet the rules and regulations of the various maritime authorities.

My advise would be to find a yard that specializes in GRP leisure vessel construction and bring along a full set of construction plans for review and costing, as opposed to trying to import a kit [ nightmare] and locate a facility for assembly, fit out and launching.
Consider a locally built shallow draft mono-hull design with plenty of volume, which can be equally as spacious as a pontoon catamaran hull form.
1. Houseboats are notorious for poor handling and  are generally considered for sheltered waters usage only. Large bays and river systems can be very hazardous to navigate due to traffic, currents and local weather conditions. All houseboats operating in Australia have very strict navigational restrictions. You will certainly require experience and an entry level Masters qualification to present to the authorities.
2. Stability is of the utmost importance for pontoon vessels, therefore all consumables[ Fuel and potable water] and waste liquids must be stored as low as possible. All tanks must be configured between the pontoons to lower the center of gravity. Pontoons are flotation devices and cannot be utilized as storage tanks. On average, 1 person uses approximately 300Ltr. per day of fresh water [ industry average] so placing a 2 or 3 day supply of F.W for 2 people on the "roof' would not only create major stability issues, design and construction considerations would add major costs to your vessel.
Once again, I am only voicing my advice based on your initial enquiry and I certainly do not want to deter you from your plan...….or dream...
I hope this is constructive and helps to steer you in a good direction.....
