Sense of humour in New Zealand

Post new topic

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore New ZealanderÂ’s culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in New Zealand?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in New Zealand and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in New Zealand?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Can only speak for this part of the South Island, the average  older Kiwi does not  seem to have much of a sense of humour as l have found out to my cost . As one Kiwi has told me their sense of humour is totally different from the rest of the world. It’s more sarcastic than just about anywhere else.

I'm afraid the sense of humour is very limited if you compare it to the UK. I was warned not to make any of my usual rude jokes as it would not be acceptable - apparently they are very politically correct. Not that I am gross, just the usual banter which is not personal or gender-specific.
This was one of the first things I noticed about NZ.
