You do not need a driving licence to buy a car

You can exchange a Malta licence for a Spanish one

As an EU National with an EU licence you do not need IDP to drive in spain

EU driving license validity

Since 1999, uniform license classes have existed throughout the European Union. Instead of the valid in the old Federal Republic 7 driving license classes there are now whole 15 driving license classes. These are no longer characterized by numbers as before, but by letters.

With the old driver's license (old driving license class 3) you get the following classes when converting your national driver's license into the uniform EU driving license:
