This Expat, Scott, didn't get any replies to the above post in 2019.聽 It probably was ignored because nobody could provide Scott with "a trusted person," not because he obtained a c茅dula without a clue how to pronounce the word.

Anyway, many Expats might not buy a used car directly from a Spanish-speaking person claiming to be its lawful owner.聽 And who could blame them.聽 Buying from a dealership is probably the wiser way to go.

But if you're trying to save some bucks and buy from an owner, the minimum research you should do is make sure the vendedor is the actual owner.

Ecuadorian police can help you here .. and there's typically no cost to use their service.

Cuenca police are currently (2021) promoting such a program.聽 You ask for the Criminalista division .. and have the police check that the VIN is valid and the VInned vehicle belongs to the would-be seller.

Whether or not you're in Cuenca, I'd also want to find out if there are any unpaid tickets on the vehicle and whether the annual 'predio' or registration-fee payments are current.

I am moving to Quito now and did some visits to dealers. My two cents (take them with a grain of salt as i am far from experienced...):
First: I would not buy an used car in Quito. Slopes are crazy and you can easily abuse any car. Also, it seems that selling is easy and you will not lose lots of value.
Second: If going to buy a used car, go with 1001carros, you have a lot of models in the website. They give you 2000km/1 year guarantee if i recall correctly. A bit more expensive than buying from a particular, but safer as cars there has been inspected.

For聽 a new Quito driver, the slopes can be daunting in some places .. and in my first year driving here, five years ago, I burned out the clutch in the first month.聽 However, the problem was my poor clutch usage, not the slopes.

After a few weeks, I learned how to deal with the clutch and the slopes...

1.聽 Easy voluntary detours put you on less sloping roads.

2.聽 Use first gear when climbing a challenging road in a vehicle.聽 Now I can use first -- and sometimes second gear -- on the challenging climbs of la Carchi and la Matovelle in my neighborhood.

I live in a 'slopey' area of El Centro, but the slopes no longer bother me and I would not trade in the use of my Chevy Sail just to avoid the slopes.
