Where is home?

Post new topic

Helene

Hello all,

I wanted to share with you an article about what we call "Home" that really made me think:
/en/expat-mag/2715 … igner.html

I was born in France, spent 10 years in Canada, I am now both French and Canadian. But I now live in Mauritius.
So, where is "Home"? I never know what to answer to that question.

Is it France because I was born there and my family lives there? Is it Canada because I have a Canadian passport? Is it Mauritius because I live here at the moment?  :unsure

How about you? Where is "Home" for you?

Julien

Very good question; I had a though about it a few months ago .. to me home is not a country nor a specify place, it is where my wife and daughter are. It could be anywhere ! :)

Hi Helene,

Now that's an interesting question.

Interesting but also not easy to give a definite answer as the word 'Home' can be highly subjective and many terms can be attributed to it.

As a matter of opinion, I would consider France home given that you were born and grow up there and still have most of your families there.
I do think the country where we were born and grow up will always stay in our heart and soul and will always be 'Home'.

Now regarding Canada, it gets more ambiguous. The question will naturally come down to you. Did you consider Canada as home? Were those 10 years long and fulfilling enough for you to consider Canada home?

Usually, some people will move to another country for a very specific reason but will never develop any sense of attachment or natural bond to the place. It can be for higher education, employment, a project or business whereby a particular place or group of people will hold more significance to the person than the country itself will.

Now, other people might definitely call another country home if they have lived long enough there and their stay proved to be productive, fulfilling and rewarding on many levels - family, professional, financial, psychological, social etc. The bond created and nurtured can be strong enough to the point where the person will experience reverse home sickness upon getting back to his/her country of birth. In your case, maybe the Canadian passport will induce some leverage into calling Canada home.

Now coming to Mauritius, your third country, we can always ask the question whether yet another country can be called 'home' or whether it will simply remain 'current country of residence' or current expat location before another one'?

Will your time in Mauritius provide you with the things, experiences, inspirations and emotions you need to call it home someday?

Up to you to tell us in some years!

Hi,
I'd definitely agree with the saying, 'home is where the heart is'.
I migrated to Canada years back, but I never really felt 'at home' there. This great country remained alien to me till  finally I  came back. I did make a lot of friends over there...but my heart was still in this tiny island!

I think “home” is a feeling, not a place

Can be both, depending on the person.

Many people do get attached to places and in many cases, that particular place is what generates the feeling.
