Greetings/Assalamoalikum! -

It is a great country to move to -Coming from the UK with IT and ID backgrounds,  I would suggest you and your husband set up your own businesses. There are great opportunities and you will definitely succeed. It is very easy and cheap to set up a company there. If you need to discuss any of the options there, welcome to write to me. Regards -

Hello

My name is Yusuf and I am  planning to live Alanya. I am currently in Virginia USA.

I look forward to meet the other expats specifically English speaking expats who live Alanya area.

I would like to find  out if anyone of you brought a car from overseas.Ìý I understand that the car tax is very highly in Turkey and I also understand that importing a car is cumbersome process specially if you do not speak Turkish.

What are pros and cons for importing vs buying car locally? I would appreciate for any information you can share.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Barry Here...and Merry Christmas to everyone...My wife and I have been preparing to move to Antalya ,Turkey ( From Atlanta ,ga.USA ) for retirement...we had been there as tourists twice before...and planning to rent a property first, and hopefuly buy one later on..and we have lot of questions from expats if they are willing to help out.

Due to recent questions i saw, i would like to explain a few things. At first, you can buy a car outside of turkey and bring it here but to drive it more than a certain time, you apply to offical institutions to change your license to a "blue plate / mavi plaka" but to do that you need to have your own business in turkey or insurance (working in somewhere at least for 3 months if i am not wrong) also you pay deposit to the offical isntitutions which will be refunded when you sell your car to another foreign person.
So, a foreign person can buy a normal car with normal prices from a turkish.
Or can buy a car that has a special license called "blue plate / mavi plaka" or as i explained above can create his/her blue plate, this type is good because it is cheaper because of less taxes. But car models are less variety because they can be sold only between foreigns so you need to be lucky to see a foreign who has your favorite car on sale. Also when you want to change your blue plate car which you bring to country, you need to wait until a foreign person comes who is willing to buy your car. So if we consider the numbers, you most probably will wait for months and months or maybe more than a year to find someone when you want to sell or change your car. So your deposit will be staying in the case of local isntitution.
Also, my best suggestion for foreigns who want to come to turkey is to take advantage of their native language, so to settle down and to pass the first year which is the hardest, they can try tourism agencies and import export companies which are related with their own country.
For other questions and things that someone may wonder, you can ask and i do my best to answer.

You asked, then got the only possible answer. By all means ignore the very clear advice from someone who has spend a long time seeing how these thieves operate so I may assist forum members, but don't moan when you lose your money - and you will lose it if you take them up on their scam offer.
