Are you a dog or a cat person? A pet can add life to a home and make an ideal travel companion during your expatriation in Australia.

However, formalities or regulations might put you off traveling with your pet making adoption a better option.

I've been resident in Australia for almost 50 years. Twelve years ago, I "adopted" a Staffordshire cross. I got her from the RSPCA. I paid the mandatory $350 to have her desexed, micro-chipped and vaccinated. The "adoption" tag is a misnomer as. strictly speaking, you cannot adopt an animal. I still have the dog, She is now over 14聽 years old. The vet told me recently that the average life-span of a dog is 15 years.
If you go to kennels to obtain a dog, the cost is likely to be about $700/$800. Added to this will be about $300 for the services mentioned above. Most apartments (flats/condos) do not allow pets. The dog must be licensed annually the local Council.
