COVID-19

Post new topic

Guest2022

Six months after first booster.

The problem will be shelf life. Pfizer apprently has a 9 month shelf life and the last reported shipments were end of last summer.

I dont think DR is ordering more vaccines except perhaps for children. They have a large unused stock.

Looks like this has not been updated recently. Many of the vaccine centers have closed down, at least here in the capital!

Update on covid19 in DR.

Without much testing taking place, covid19 new cases and active cases have been steadily increasing recently from virtually zero. The day positivity has been creeping up daily and is nearly at 6%. A few people are on ventilators again.

Todays Bulletin finds 142 new cases with day positivity of 5.35% and 492 active cases

Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago register 94% of new cases of COVID-19

This Sunday's bulletin indicates that active cases are located at 492

This has been sufficient for two hospitals to announce today and  reintroduce mask requirements.

Cedimat and the Metropolitan Hospital of Santiago resume measures against COVID-19

Cedimat made the use of a mask mandatory for everyone who comes to that center, while HOMS only for its medical and administrative staff.

There is unlikely to be any national requirements and you can make your own decisions. Covid19 and the Omicron variants are still about in DR and with only 54.%% of the population with two shots, it still has opportunity to spread here. 2.33m have had boosters.

I had my fourth shot Friday as a precaution against the expected next wave - many countries are now seeing an increase in cases again as behaviour relaxes and immunity from vaccines and infection wane.

On a related matter the recent surge in hepatitis cases in children is being linked to covid19.

Children can get vaccinated for covid19 here and it does look like having your child vaccinated may be helpful to avoid this surge in hepatitis cases.

@lennoxnev  interesting to note. COVID 19 Link to Hepatitis.

EMA issued a report on side effects from covid vaccines in the last few days.

Pfizer had nearly 800k issues out of 600m doses and 8 k deaths. Very low numbers but confirmed. The hepatitis link is worrysome.

PAHO warns of an increase in Covid cases in the country and asks to resume preventive measures

Through a statement, the Pan American Health Organization ( PAHO / WHO) warned this Monday that the country shows a "real increase" in cases of Covid-19 and lists preventive recommendations that include hand washing and use of a mask in places closed.

According to the published text, the agency “confirms that the indicators indicate a real increase that could correspond to a new wave of the disease; however, the incidence to date is still low, we still do not have signs of serious morbidityâ€............

The population has forgotten covid but covid has not forgotten DR and a new wave could be starting through imported cases.

Europe is seeing highly contagious cases of variants BA4 and BA5 increase rapidly and both feature Delta as well as Omicron characteristics. The USA also is seeing these variants dominate so they are probably here. BA5 apparently is considerably more transmittable than the first Omicron variants. No wonder there are concerns in PAHO and MOH here.

Time to mask up in public places voluntarily again.

Cedimat and HOMS now require masking already!   We all need to be aware!

Not likely the government will revert to restrictions so it's up to individuals

This is interesting to read...considering I spent almost 4 hours at Cedimat on Sunday (May 15) for an MRI and did not wear a mask at all! I had one with me but was never asked to wear it. I'd say about half the people I saw there were wearing masks - some under their noses, some around their necks. I'm not even certain that all the employees I saw were wearing masks.

Not sure what day the new rules are effective.....

They announced the Cedimat compulsory measure in Diario Libre during Sunday 15th as link posted above. So you were there as the new rule was about to be applied.

Rising again

Public Health reports 324 new infections; daily positivity rises to 8.06%

This has been on a steady increase for about  15 days.

Yes, covid19 is back. Perhaps a new wave is beginning.

500 new cases in this mornings bulletin with 1,567 active cases and day positivity of 8.62%. It appears they are starting to test more and find more cases. Most cases reported today are in Santo Domingo but of recent in Santiago, La Altagracia and Puerto Plata.

Slow but steady occupancy of beds from zero but none on ventilators.

If you are cautious it is time to mask up again in public places in the cities and get your booster.

Cases reported in 25 out of 32 provinces so it is widespread.

USA no longer requiring any testing for returning as of midnight tonight!

And on that news our positivity rate here is over 16% and no need for any caution!

It's totally up to individuals and individual  businesses.

Canada has "suspended" entry testing for Coved 19 for fully vaccinated travelers arriving in Canada - until July 31. Things can always change & they start up again or cease thereafter - who knows!!!

That 'random' testing on arrival.... the Neg testing went away a while ago

Masks are gone now too in Canada....with 1 or 2 exceptions

The current rise in covid19 cases in DR may be flattening out but without doubt the spread has been quite wide albeit in general mild with low hospital occupancy and a few deaths last week.

I have just returned from a two week visit to the UK with no covid19 border controls at either end of my trip.

I apparently picked up the covid19 virus at Punta Cana airport or during my flight to the UK albeit I did wear a mask - and was one of very few - throughout the flight whereas in the terminal and VIP Lounge I was less thorough. No other contact in DR had shown any cold like symptoms and my circle of contact prior to flying was minimal.

It was cold in the UK and I had the usual jet lag and congestion on arrival. There was nothing unusual about my health other than congestion from which I suffer habitually as an effect of narrow sinuses and which I relieved using Lemsip.

I was in good shape and enjoyed an active break with staying with my older twin sister and visiting brother who are very active and like walking. I visited my son and nephews and their family.

A week and a half later, my sister started a dry cough and cold symptoms and my brother started to feel tired with headache and body aches plus the cough. They took rapid covid19 tests and were both positive. We assessed that I was the only link but I was now negative. A few days later my nephews who we met later in the first week tested positive too. Again I was assessed as the link.

Apparently Omicron is transmittable from day 3 and lasts on average 4.4 days for the triple vaccinated. I have had 4 Sinovac shots and my sister and brother had 2 AZ shots followed by 2 Pfizer shots and in all cases the last shot was about 6 weeks ago. My nephews have had 3 Pfizer shots. They are all recovered and I seemed to get off lightest not having had any real symptoms.

In the UK nobody wears masks anymore so I must have infected others whilst travelling on train and tube unknowingly. But at least the vaccination uptake in the UK is very high. At least most of the time I was not in large company just close family.

According to recent studies in the UK, Omicron infection does not give one immunity from later infection.

Read the article below.

COVID-19: Catching Omicron 'does little to protect against reinfection from variant'

Vaccines clearly are the best means of protection against severe infection and that is what they are intended to do. Sinovac has always been my preferred option once that became available here in DR and despite all the negative publicity it is probably the safest vaccine and being a deactivated virus is designed to train the body to recognize and counteract the covid19 virus in whatever form.

It worked for me and I do hope a fifth Sinovac shot is offered here later in the year knowing they have plenty of stock and low uptake.

The govt here declared no 6th wave because there is no new variant. I have zero faith in this at all.

Each is on their own frankly, get vaccinated.

@lennoxnev wow I’m glad your ok and hope the same for your family also stay safe everyone let’s pray this is done or now so we have some control

I have something right now... runny nose, sore throat, fever

Might be gripe.....might not.... don't care
Guest2022
You have 3 classic symptoms so you should assume you have covid19 and take measures not to pass it on to others who may not be fully vaccinated, and that applies to a very high number in DR, because they might not be so lucky with mild symptoms.

Had I had more than one symptom including classic symptoms of sore throat, cough and fever, I would have taken more care and masked up. But I didn't.

As I mentioned in the UK they have very high levels of (triple) vaccinations and quadruple for those at highest risk. As such as a population they have less reason to care despite an estimated 400k cases per week. But as the Imperial College study posted in link above, infection by Omicron does not give immunity from reinfection.

Yes we must live with it but we should not ignore it. It is an active virus that is constantly changing and needs monitoring.
WillieWeb
Yes, classic symptoms, but also for gripe

My neighborhood has a lot this... as does Cabrera

The current covid19 'wave' continues in DR with day positivity hovering in the mid teens and active cases increasing. Hospital cases are still low and that is probably due to the wave being the BA1 and 2 omicron strains which affect the upper respiratory system and give mild symptoms generally.

But don't be complacent. BA 4 and 5 is now beginning to circulate in Europe and North America and research suggests that these variants are both more contagious, more immunity evasive and are affecting lung tissue like the earlier Delta and Alpha strains. if this translates into reality this is going to be bad news for society which has dispensed with preventative measures on a large scale. These variants have yet to come to DR apparently but are now circulating in the UK as articles below:

Covid: Omicron sub-variants ‘evolving to target the lungs and overcome immunity’ as UK cases surge

Scientists fear the sub-variants may be similar to the more deadly Alpha and Delta variants

Omicron subvariants escape antibodies elicited by vaccination and BA.2.2 infection

Covid-19: Omicron sub variants driving new wave of infections in UK

Everybody has to make their own decisions, but be aware of the potential for an increase in more severe cases and higher hospitalizations in due course.
