Water Water Water

Post new topic

Over the last couple of days I have read  two articles about visitors getting sick from drinking the local water. Is this an isolated incident , I am looking forward to getting washed in information (a dad joke)

Bobby:)

I don't know why anyone would be drinking the water since it isn't potable in the DR.  not surprising they got sick

planner

No one should be drinking  the water here. We all use bottled water which is very inexpensive!   A  filtration system can be implemented if you choose but most just buy the big bottles.

Karin1

Yes. Only bottled water is to be used for drinking and all cooking (and for me even brushing teeth).   The water can have parasites and that will make you sick.

Yikes! People should know not to drink tap water here! You can get the big 5 gallon bottles of water for 40 DOP delivered (with an exchange of empty bottles).

In the house we're building (can't wait until we can start saying "built":)), we are using primarily rainwater collection, but will supplement with municipal water. We have a whole-house filtration system with UV treatment for bacteria. I'm ordering test kits so that I can periodically monitor the water to make sure our treatment system is effective!

Almost since the time we moved here, 18 months ago, I've used tap water to wet my toothbrush and then rinse it after brushing. That hasn't gotten me sick so far - but I still don't want to drink it or use it for cooking!

Here in Punta Cana (CapCana), it costs alot more than 40 pesos to have those 5gallon water bottles delivered.  I paid $150 pesos in the store to get one with an exchange bottle. But I am picking it up and taking it home with me. No delivery. I could not get someone to deliver water to our apartment.  I dont speak Spanish and I am an obvious gringo so I am sure that has something to do with it.  Still its not expensive but 40 pesos, wow.

planner

It hasn't been 40 pesos in quite a long time. Here in an upscale neighborhood in the capital it's now 75 pesos.

Is there a colmado in your neighborhood? That's where to get it.  They will deliver unless you are in the middle of nowhere!  You pay the deposit on the first bottle or bottles. I always get 2 at a time!

ddmcghee

Wow - I guess we were getting a deal! I looked back at my records and see that it was actually 45 per bottle. At our current rental, we just stop at a colmado to swap the bottles out. Prices range from 50-60 DOP depending on where we stop.

We got the 45 DOP price from August to December when we were renting out in Barbecoa. An independent guy with a truck paid 35 DOP at Agua Lux and charged his customers 45 DOP. We would get 6 and our next-door neighbor would get 10 at the same time. We tipped him too, but now that I think about it, he wasn't making much money

Then I guess we are really getting a deal at our condo.
Delivered to the door for 30 DOP and we just tip when delivered.

WillieWeb

You can filter whole house or just the kitchen sink.....

Have had whole house for years and nobody sick

planner

Absolutely and some people do just that!

Does the condo provide that service or one of the water services? Obviously, here in LT, we have lower prices!

planner

On that note you also have to be careful of who you buy your water from.   Every once in a while  Salud Publico goes in and shuts down  water filtration and bottling companies for non compliance!   Sometimes the cheapest is not the best!  Just be aware.

I believe Willieweb has passed…

How is the maintenance on these, how often do you need to change filters? I try to get an overview of the costs. I can see the benefits and conveniences.

@ddmcghee  even  brushing with contaminated water is very risky and you don’t  lnow if it is or it isn’t.  Mom near died from just brushing her teeth with tap  water in Panama

planner

I am sorry for your loss.

Most locals and many expats brush with tap water here.

Filters are normally changed every 3 months but again this can depend on volume of water used.

My hubby, RockyM, answered above with a link to the company we bought from. We order replacement filters from Amazon. We allocate space in our suit cases on every trip back from the US!
