Expensive Italian car insurance

Hi,
We’re in the process of moving to Tuscany and initial enquiries into car insurance have thrown up some ridiculously high premiums, especially for an old classic car that in the UK costs £150 a year and in Italy is ten times that.
In the UK we have both limited mileage insurance and pay by day policies that make owning more than one car (particularly if it’s your hobby) relatively easy.
Can anyone point me in the direction of specialist insurers that might be more considerate towards low usage vehicles?

Don't forget you will also have the added cost of importing vehicles. Also to change your driving license to an Italian one.

Plus if the car is here more than 3 months  you will have to get the car re-registered to an Italian plate, too.
Car insurance here is prohibitively expensive even if you are able to move your no claims across, a max of 6 years, but if you have classic car insurance this doesn't apply.

Suggest you try the car club of your car type and ask if they have an Italian equivalent who can help you. People here do have classic cars so there must be an insurance out there somewhere.

There are numerous companies which insure 'per km' such as Genertel, zurich connect and so on.  If you car is more than 25 yrs old it can be registered as a classic car, which has limits on the amount you can drive, but leads to lower premiums.   Obviously it would have to be imported and reregistered as an Italian car first, with the alterations that requires.
