Seriously planning on making the move to Istanbul

Post new topic

Hi all,

I'm 58 and will be retired soon. I'll be single and am looking to relocate to Istanbul. I love the city and history and have been there 3 times (covid had other plans for my 4th visit last March).

At any rate I'm curious what kind of expat community there is (I don't speak Turkish, but am planning to learn). Particularly good/bad experiences from other Americans would be helpful.

I'm coming from San Francisco and have spent my working career here working in tech, but I'm ready to move on from this focus in my life.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help!

Well you have to practice your Turkish. Most of locals here do not speak English properly.

If you are planning to reside here for a long period of time, I would suggest you to rent/buy an apartment in Asian side of Istanbul. It is definitely safer and more quiet. However, Expat communities are mostly situated in European part of the city.

In case if you need any other advise, let me know. And best of luck in your journey!
