You can also try a local dealer across from Baileys restaurant in Sosua left side of Claro. I normally rent there and never any problems. Not the newest cars but at half the cost .

planner

I would not try any of these sources until you know the market and how things are done here.

One of our members Cruffman is in this business. He has helped a number of people find good reliable vehicles. You many want to contact him.

Importing a vehicle - unless you do it with the residencia exemption it is very very expensive!

And welcome to the forums!

Krumite

Thank you Stan, very grateful , we are both newcomers into the island , although I am a little familiar with the culture as my sister in law is from Santiago de los Caballeros and she resides in Puerto Rico

StanR

You are very welcome Krumite. My recommendation was only if you are looking for a rental. Planner is right for buying Cruffman would be the best choice. If you send me a PM I can provide the best method of contacting him.

Krumite

Thank you Planner: Greatly appreciated it , as you know moving is not easy, here in Texas I am at the final steps of selling my house, fly to Latvia and pick up my wife then fly to Dominican Republic to settle. I have been blessed in many ways ; first being married to a wonderful Latvia woman which is also my best friend, second locating a trusted realtor in Dominican Republic and locating potentially a lot of beautiful homes down there. As you know Covid-19 is creating havoc all over the world and is very sad to see how world economies are suffering and borrowing to assist their local citizens. Hopefully 2021 will be a great year for the world

Krumite

thank you Stan R , here is my e-mail : *** , hopefully I will get there before Christmas coordinating everything here could become tedious from house selling, vehicle and going to pick my wife in Europe as she is stuck there, but not for long. Many Blessings . Jose

thank you , I was looking last night at them , there is quite a supply of them in the Capital about 3 hours drive from Sosua

cruffman

the capital is where you need to look. it is worth the sacrifice to make the trip...it will pay dividends in the end. the best cars, and deals, are in Santo Domingo..

Krumite

Thank you Cruffman: in was checking some sites in the capital and they do have quite an array of vehicles. Is about 3hours drive from Sosua , how are the roads if I may ask ? I fell in love with several of them and was telling my wife doing face time with her from Texas to Latvia. I drive here a genesis are they suitable for the roads over there? or SUV ?

Krumite

Thank you I checked them and was checking some other dealers maybe in Santiago but the best ones are in the capital. I was surprised to see the odometer in kilometers rather than miles like here in the states. These must be the euro models ?

cruffman

the ones with the kilometers were bought new from dealers in the DR...the ones with miles are the ones which are bought at auctions in the USA..

cruffman

you do not need a Genesis in the DR. you cannot get parts for them yet...there is no presence in the DR as of yet. stick to the known quantities...if 2012 is too old, and you want 6 cylinders, get a Kia Sorento EX with the V6 motor. it is almost a Hyundai, anyway....

Krumite

thank you Cruffman , yes I will definitely will work on this tonight and maybe increased by budget for a bit. Learn something new today I will begin contact with you once I get there. Jose

cruffman

i wish you a safe flight down. let me know when you are ready to make the move..

Blessings...

Krumite

Thank you Cruffman ,this corona virus is slowing things down a bit and I also have to fly to Latvia pick-up my wife, visit my mother in law , look at the potential upcoming restrictions over there and fly down to D.R. I am ok with all this, is part of life. Allow me to ask parts for vehicle in Sosua are they easy too find ? meaning maintenance parts for a vehicle, I like to mantain mine myself as for example I use dura-lube on the engine block for protection etc.

cruffman

i have resources....i have a guy who can source anything i need...when you find cars for people, it helps if you can get parts if and when they need them.

Krumite

ok is getting good, you where right there are hardly any 6 cyl in the island and the ones I found are turbo not my cup of tea I had one before. I am also checking in Supercarros in the capital and they have a vast selection I came across one a buddy of mine has and he paid here 30k , this one in the capital is similar 2008 M.B. Class S 350L 6 CYL with 40,286 for $13,900 beautiful machine I have worked on them before . would it be suitable for Sosua and the terrain ? I am definitively will seek your services.

cruffman

be very careful what you buy. when you start talking about a Benz in this country, you are looking for headaches

Krumite

did not know that referencing the car ? parts? or just people ?

DRVisitor

What cars/trucks do you recommend?

Krumite

/Documents/Kia Sorento LX 2014 #1121507 - SuperCarros.com.pdf

I was just looking and never heard of Changan. Anyone have any feedback on those?

Krumite

planner

Krumite - are you working on residency?  You understand the risks of driving here long term without residency and a Dominican license?

Tutankuban

Thanks for your reply to this thread Planner. I found this post really useful in relation to your response. I thought it will benefit many here:

A lot of the Chinese vehicles for sale here have good prices. The problem is finding parts.

thecolonel

When i lived in Sosua, the most practical vehicles were those golfcarts: no licence plates, no insurance, no nothing.  But some gringos felt it just wasnt proper to have no govn't control over their vehicles.

Krumite

I believe I found it looking for vehicles over there Changan  is a Chinese made vehicle if I am not incorrect , the one I looked at is looks nice

Krumite

Planner , to respond to you I have not worked on the residency yet , but I will, I am taking all this in Phases per say from getting established registering myself and wife with the U.S. embassy , looking at properties , vehicles . The fortunate part is that we will travel with clothes and a laptop as it is easier. We are also blessed as we have another property in Puerto Rico that we basically have double of everything until the sale of this house that we sold everything as it is more cost efficient and less of a hassle.

Krumite

I will yes I know very SUV is called jeepeta slang for jeep ? I had one here as my personal car and my wife drove the Genesis this one , I have been blessed as the buyer of the house wants the vehicle also. Everything is looking good.  I will check on that one , I prefer the 6 cyl , the 4 cyl do not make it ? May all of you be safe and blessed !!!! Krumite

Krumite

thank you : yes I did checked them and wow they have a large selection in the capital which is about 3 hours from Sosua, I will have to drive over there, check them out and get one and transport it back . I feel in love with a Benz for my wife , I might get the one I looked at. People are afraid of Mercedes and they should not be, Germans they do have it together when they build vehicles, they are easy to work on and to mystery to them. As for myself I will get a bicycle ?  Thank you . Krumite

thecolonel

Krumite, yesterday I sent you important info about suitable vehicles for the sosua are. They censored it, but you can ask me for it in a personal p.m.

Krumite

Thank you Colonel , I do not think we are allowed to post our P.M. on this site ? One of our member have my P.M. I will check with the previous posting .

Krumite

ask STAN R he has mine P.M.
