Ayi requirement in Minhang - Advice from other expat families

Post new topic

Neus.Crespo

Hi all,

My husband and I are international educators who moved to Shanghai in January 2020. I am currently taking some time off to take care of my twin baby girls, while my husband works full time in an international school in Minhang.

Taking care of the babies and the house on my own became impossible, so in October we hired a live-in ayi through [link moderated]. It was really difficult to find somebody to work for us, as most ayis are not willing to live or travel that far from the city center (we are about 1 hour away from People's Square by Metro). The thing is I am really having some difficulties with my current ayi, and I am looking for some recommendations on which other companies or individuals I should contact to find a new, more suitable ayi for us.

I would really appreciate some advice from the expat community.

Thank you very much :)

In China you can find nannies all over the place, but you WANT CERTIFIED workers. The certification process consists of a three month educational program, with a two part test and role-play interviews to qualify for the certificate. (I know because my wife obtained that certificate.)

Rates for a certified nanny vary from region to region. Here in Zhuhai the going rate is from 16,000 RMB/ month to 21,000 RMB/month. In nearby Shenzhen the rates are much higher, with a variance from 18,000 to 56,000 RMB/month. You can probably negotiate for twins.

To can mitigate the costs somewhat by the nationality of your child. My children are Chinese by design. Maybe one day they might want to go to the Untied States, and then I will make the necessary arrangements. Anyways, if you have a certified nanny, with Chinese children, it will be much easier to negotiate the fees down. All Chinese children are monitored by the local health clinics and services, and they will be able to direct you to CERTIFIED nannies immediately.

If however, you are a foreigner, and your children are also foreign, then you probably are not tied to the local health services. And most do not speak English at all. I would suggest that you get one of your local Chinese friends to help you talk to the local clinic (they have the green and white emblem in your neighborhood) and they will get you in direct connection to registered and certified nannies.

Sure you can find a stranger who claims to be a nanny. And yes you can get in contact with an agency that hires these kinds of people. But that is not what you want. You want an educated, registered and certified nanny. These are YOUR CHILDREN, for goodness sakes! Taking care of your children right now using the proper techniques, and knows exactly how to perform infant CPR, and what foods to eat and not to eat are not natural-god-given attribute that happen by osmosis. You must learn what to do and how to do it. A real certified nanny will do that.

You should not be paying over 10,000 yuan for any level of experienced ayi, in any city. No matter how qualified they are.   Unless they are fluent in English or are foreign.  The only exception would be Hong Kong.

There are plenty of agencies out there.
