Question about moving with firearms and Puerto Rico Arms Act of 2020

wonhardworker

@techdispatch

Did you bring multiple guns you when you made the move or ship them to a gun store in PR?

Karma7553

Sorry wonhardworker, I did understand your question about the $100.00?

please repeat

techdispatch

@ialmodovar70 -local law states, you cannot own ( even touch) a firearm in PR unless you have a PR Permit-but, the process to obtain one now is pretty quick once you turn-in the required docs. It took me less than 30 days. My female cousin just got hers in about 20 days. I personally did not ship mine over until I had my permit in my hand. Hope this helps.

@techdispatch is there a limit on ammo you ship to PR from the states?

Karma7553

I personally would not attempt to ship ammo to PR. Typically carriers such as FedEx/UPS can ship, however i am not certain about it being allowed as cargo on aircraft. You may want to contact FedEx/UPS to make sure.

Laws are sketchy here and can be bent (usually not to your advantage) given the circumstances. I know that airlines do allow a limited amount as a carry on (I think up to 5lbs) but check with your airlines. To me its not worth the potential hassle that can occur. It only takes one police officer here that doesn't know the law themselves for your to accidentally go to jail.

If you are currently in Pr, please please stay prepared, last weekend 3 killers was lose, police say they was looking for them (LOL) On Dec. 8,2023 I woke to one of these killers trying to steal my vehicle, he was armed. I shot a warning shot at 50 yards 12" from his foot and he didn't blink. My wife called 991 four times and they simply said we don't have anyone to send. I held on this guy nonstop for 2.5 hours without lowering my firearm. Finally, police arrive only to treat me as the criminal, they did not search him, handcuffed him in the front (not behind) placed him in the front seat of a police truck with only one policeman. No report taken by police etc. I said to the police "make sure you take him for some crispy creme donuts) he did not go to jail he was released same day. So thank god for the 2nd amendment, you're on your own here and have to be your own 911.cause aint nobody coming. All the training in the world does not prepare you for a real life situation you may have to make quickly. Please my motto is "don't get ready.....stay ready" And i live in the remote center of the mountains. The threats are real please please be aware at all times.

@karma7553, what is the law on ammo? How much can I bring/ship?

Karma7553

Puerto rico law is not clear…. for a reason. there laws are flexible dep on who you are. There is savings in bringing your own ammo thats worth what the potential penalty would be with authorities here. even if airlines allow it to cone it will be an issue here NOT worth the hasele . this aint USA its wild west: be safe and just purchase ammo here.

jmr3

@Karma7553. Thanks for the info.

Karma7553

I hope this helps, In PR when your asking questions about anything legally you can expect to get various opinions and usually wrong info. Although PR laws may be available online, always always always confirm with a local attorney. and anything and everything that any attorney speaks with about. Always get EVERYTHING in writting. here in PR if its not in writting….. It never happened.

jmr3

Understood. Yes very helpful.

Do you know any attorneys that can provide this information?

Karma7553

I would suggest calling Noel Torres Rosado in Arecibo PR 787-878-8400

jmr3

Thanks

@ialmodovar70...No time frame, just  remember your not allowed to touch a firearm until you do. If you get caught, your toast.

techdispatch

@jmr3 Hello there...Actually PR firearms and ammo is very clear. All you have to do is obtain your PR CCW permit before bringing in your weapon and ammo or ship them directly to any of the hundreds of armory's here in PR. Upon receiving your CCW, pick them up, they will do your registration for you. That's it!

techdispatch

@jmr3 I believe recent changes went from 5k rounds yearly to 1k per year. Unless your are a professional competition shooter-you must be a permit holder and active shooting club member and a registered competitive shooter. I cannot stress enough that all armory operators are always current and any and all law changes, amendmends and updates. Just ask.

techdispatch

@ialmodovar70...No time frame, but legally you cannot touch any firearm per PR law. Oh, and to all others that asks, yes it's $100. Per each firearm, that's what I was charged anyway, contact any local Armory by phone and ask. I've stated this before, local armory's are always up to date with any changes in procedure, it' s there job. Considering prices on firearns here, the $100. bucks is a reasonable price to pay to have your own shipped here. Stay safe!
