Thanks to everyone who took the time to recommend Dr lawyers. I bought a condo in Juan Dolio and am coming down for a week starting the seventeenth. Hopefully will be able to close at that time. It turns out that I now need referral for an English speaking general insurance agent/broker who represents good quality companies.  Looking  for a bank recommendation too because I will need to bring in funds from offshore to pay condo fees etc. Thanks in advance for your help.  Are there any peculiarities that a first time consumer of DR insurance and banking services  oughta know about in advance? Thanks Again!

The requirements for opening an account vary by bank and by your home country (for instance, if you are a US citizen, the banks have to contact the IRS before your account can be opened).

There are documents you will need to bring with you, like a letter from your home bank stating how long you’ve had accounts and that you are in good standing.

Determine which banks are going to be close to your location and search through this forum for lots of feedback on different banks. Reach out to the bank to determine what their requirements are, and understand that accounts are usually not opened same day. We spent about an hour “applying” for an account, then another 2 hours about 3 weeks later when they finally approved us. Ours took longer because my husband worked for a bank at the time and our branch had an overzealous compliance officer who was determined to find something wrong with our application!

For your closing

Just wire the money to your lawyer.... I did that.

Thank you for the advice on banks. It is all very helpful especially learning that will need a reference from my own bank. And weeks just to open a new account sounds strange too. Need to get accustomed to many things taking longer in DR.

So far as wiring money to lawyer. That is what I plan to do. I am coming down to view the condo and for a change of scenery.  While vacationing  I will look after some things that have to do with
the purchase. Perhaps I should not have s aid I was coming to close the transaction. That was misleading. I understand why you would say to just to wire the funds. All in all I just want to get away for a  bit now that
restrictions  around covid are  beginning to ease!

I'm an American citizen and I opened in May both a US Dollar account and Pesos account with BHD Leon.

The process was ridiculously easy.

I went with my drivers license, passport and social security card.
They took all my info and then told me to come back in 7 days.

When I went back in 7 days I signed all the papers and made a deposit into each account and that's it.

The rep showed me how to use the bank's app and I was finished.

So for me it was a very easy and quick process.

Another example of how an experience here can be radically different from person to person. It is a challenge providing useful advice when the systems and processes are not consistent or reliable. This should be kept in mind here. As I've said before....it depends on who you are standing in front of on that day. They may be having a bad hair day,  Mercury may be in retrograde, etc. Or in our case we had to go toe to toe with an over zealous risk officer

That is all great information. I will look up that bank.

Yes I am beginning to see that things move along differently. The wait on things might even be refreshing so long  as I look at it in comparison to  the the rush rush around culture I am exiting. That is how I am gonna try to take things in stride.

Money Transfer Service!

We have a bank account with Ban Reservas.  When I want to send money from Canada to DR, I move the money to this bank account using the service called "WorldRemit".   I simply say I have Canadian $ (using my debit card=bank account) and I want to buy DR pesos, and you will see how much you can get (it changes hourly).  The fee to do a transfer is almost free ($4) and the rates are the best I could find anywhere.

You only have to setup the recipient name/bank account/address (once) and then your ready to go.

I am sure there is a limit as to how much you can send in a day.  If I do a big transfer it is still under $100,000 pesos without a problem.   With Ban Reservas, the money is in the account in 5 minutes!  This is an arrangement that WorldRemit has with the bank in DR.  It takes a day or two or three, if its another bank.

So we are happy with this service.  No need to every travel with cash.

BHD Leon wanted us to provide translated copies of our 3 months of bank statements! As Rocky said, it really depends on the branch, person, and day!
