@Julien I am same. Can anybody help me an Julian how to transition to Vietnam?

Hello everyone, my name is Scott residing in AZ USA. I am seriously considering moving to either Nha Trang or somewhere in Thailand in a year or so. I plan on visiting first to see if it's to good to be true. I want to be on the beach or very near it in either country so I can scuba easily and be a little cooler. I'm really excited about this but I want to do it right.  Any tips, advice, or 💰 would be appreciated.  Thank you all and Thank you Julien for starting this site.

Good morning all.
Firstly may i introduce myself. My name is Jason, im English and fifty two years old.
I am looking for employment in Vietnam, my background is thirty plus years in finanacial services, london & Dubai.
Im single living in Bali, with a desire to take up a middle management role in an investment company, securities trading or compliance. This said however i am flexible, with some good corporate years of experience behind me, i feel i could offer value in leadership in alternative businesses who might value my finance background in capital markets. A young 52 with a massive sporting appetite particularly cycling on road bikes. Could the team here advise me on the best way of meeting prospective employers?
Very grateful for any light here.
Kind regards

Contact the employment services on offer in VN. Places such as Vietnam Works would be a good start.

@Julien Hello Julien and other members.
I am planning to visit Hanoi with a view to find employment and rental accommodation. I am a seasoned TESOL and English teacher where I have taught and met many Vietnamese students over the years. I  wonder if anyone might offer any advice or guidance on my intentions.

My background is Norwegian (moved to Australia as a three year old) and my children are all independant now. My main concern is that I am hyper allergic to fish, which may be difficult to avoid in Vietnam but I am told there is less use and dependance of fish cuisine and fish sauce in the North than there is in the South of Vietnam.

Welcome to the Vietnam forum, rubjaal.

See the good advice given by Colin in this post immediately prior to yours.

Also, consider posting directly to the Hanoi city forumyour general inquiry without contact information (interested parties can connect with you using the forum private message system).

Also, check out the Jobs in Hanoi section of the website, where you can find any current offers of employment AND post your own CV.

It's also possible to find useful information in the Hanoi Classified Ads section.

One solution to avoiding fish sauce is to only eat vegetarian food (easy to do anywhere in Vietnam) although you would be more likely to encounter Diếp Cá, known as "fish mint" (a taste thought to be quite unpleasant to many westerners).

Many Vietnamese cooks incorporate nước mắm into their dishes as a seasoning, in much the same way that some western chefs use Worcestershire sauce (also fish based), so you'll need to make sure it's definitely not a part of the recipe.

It's sad (to me) to consider that restriction, because I can't imagine how uninteresting some of my favorite Vietnamese foods would be without any nước mắm whatsoever.

Good luck!

@rubjaal Welcome,
Good job it's not a peanut allergy they put them on everything especially scallops, oysters, mussels, soups, salads by the time you have finished a meal you have gone through half a packet of the pesky things. 1f602.svg

I agree it would be hard to imagine eating anything without fish sauce, we go through heaps of the stuff even if we just have rice and pork, it's spooned over the rice and everything is dunked in it.

Hello everyone,

The new member thread is drifting in Off-topic. No post was deleted on the Philippines forum. There are experts on all forums and rest assured we are in touch and discuss about actions that should be taken.

This thread needs a new start. OceanBeach was only pointing out that the member has an identical post....I suggest that we put any misunderstandings behind and move on.

Have a beautiful day,

Hello everyone! I have been wanting to move to Vietnam since I did a motorcycle trip there in 2016, and it looks like it is finally happening in October (for a 2 year "sabbatical"). My partner and I are planning on starting out in Ho Chi Minh, tho I have my eyes on spending some time in Da Nang as well. I've already learned so much from the forums here, so thanks for that! I look forward to getting to know some folks here and hopefully IRL as well!

Friday with Mateo
Hi everybody, I am Mateo ... nice to meet you ... electronically albeit.

I am a divorced single 55 year-old ethnic Hungarian/Polish (born USA) man living in East Asia on and off since 1989.  My first time overseas was to Okinawa as a US Marine Corps engineer mechanic.  Since then, I have been hooked on East Asian culture, people, history, language, music, nature, etc etc.

My first time in Vietnam was 2013.  Since then, have been back many times, living in HCMC, Da Nang, Hoi An and Da Lat.  I must admit, Da is my favorite due to the similar climate to the San Francisco Bay Area where I grew up in my pre-teen and teen years before joining the military service.

With the decline of government and society in USA, my birth country ... I do not see myself ever returning and I want to find my home here in Asia ... between Okinawa and Vietnam ... two of my most favorite places in the world ... I have lived/worked/visited in 14 countries including Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Guam, Micronesia, Marianas, Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, Kuwait, Iraq, Egypt, Germany, Italy.

I spend most of my time cooking for my weekly online culinary arts educational show where I teach traditional "grandma style" recipes with a focus on "Food is Medicine" ... which happens to be an emerging field of medicine which I am fascinated with. I am also studying formally for my certification in this new field of medical nutrition.

Besides that, I am a father of two fine young men, golf coach, English coach, Japanese coach, MMA coach, photography coach, writing coach, artist, a writer/photographer/editor, art gallery owner, book collector, history/language/anthropology geek, musician, general adventurer ... among other interests.

Next year I plan to relocate to Okinawa with my soon-to-be Vietnamese wife and her son to semi-retire and open tiny-home style home-stay and artist retreat in 2024.

Hope that covers it.

Hi I’m Foster and I live in Ghana. All my life this is where I have been because of that I will love to work elsewhere with great minds so as to sharpen my progress as well. I’m a teacher here and teaches at a high school. I have heard of Vietnam being a very beautiful and peaceful place so I chose Vietnam to be a place for people like me. Personally I like to explore a lot, basically meeting and working with new people. Thank you.

A quick hint based on a quirk of this site.   To not double post, never hit the back button on your browser right after you post.   The safest way is to close out off the site altogether and reenter.

Hi Everyone,

Nice meeting all of you.

I will be coming to Vietnam soon in order to visit factories and start making a list of sourcing products. May aim is to become a sourcing agent for wholesalers in North American and North Africa for niche products. If anyone would like to discuss entrepreneurship or even general subjects with me (Ps. I love American

Football/NFL) please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks

Born in Ireland and dual-Canadian citizen. Toronto is considered home, but I go between Canada and LA, where my Vietnamese wife and 8-year-old son live. We spent the summer in Vietnam. On a professional note, I am an advisor and researcher and professor of practice at McGill University. Lived in Saigon for 5 years, from 2014-2019, came back in June 2022 on a Canadian government assignment to help with food safety in Vietnam and also advise World Bank Vietnam on digital transformation. Will be staying in Thao Dien until about Feb/Mar 2023. We have long-term plans to retire to Vietnam.

Hello! My name is Jan and I am a Junior High school counselor in Houston, Texas with a dream of living and working in Vietnam one day. I know it's a long ways away, but I will be eligible to retire in 2026 after 30yrs in Education and that's when I will make the move to VN. Right after I retire here, I would like to either Teach or be a School Counselor in Vietnam. I also hope to work for or create a Program that can benefit disadvantaged children in Vietnam too. I'm here on this Forum to learn as much as I can and hopefully be prepared when I make the move.

Sorry if this is too personal but it does seem a bit odd.  Why are your wife and son in the US while you are in Canada?   I am assuming that LA is Los Angeles and not Long An.   Has Canadian immigration been uncooperative?

@Tiiger

Hi Tiiger, and welcome to expat.com!

I suggest you open a new thread, on the Da Nang forum, here.

The Vietnam general forum will provide you with a wealth of information about VN overall.

Also, though at times the results are sort of "iffy", the search page can really come through at times. Try spelling variations, as in Danang and Da Nang

Please let us know how you fare, and please don't hesitate to ask further questions,

Lots of friendly folk here at expat.com willing to help!

Again, welcome!

Just be wary that many agents will be posting fake ads. Its unfortunate but it's how things work in VN.

@jasonwindle

  Hi Jason. I am considering a move to RETIRE in either Bali or Danang.  Indonesia seems to have relaxed rules for foreigners who want to love in Bali, but I prefer Vietnam only gives 30 day visas, and you have to keep going out of the country.  Have you found a way around that?   Also, a personal question; why are you choosing to leave Bali for Danang?

30 -day is all you get as a tourist. If working or married you can get longer visas.
