When I get a new passport in the NL, is my mvv sticker transfered?

Post new topic

Veli Furkan TURKOGLU

I have two questions;

1) I have an appointment for MVV Sticker for the Visa in the consulate and one of the requirements state that "Valid passport (at least valid 6 months from application date)." Does this application date refer to the MVV application date or to get the sticker? My passport will be expired on Oct 19 / 2022. Do you think this poses a threat to not get a sticker?

2) When I want to change my passport in the NL, is my MVV transferred to my new sticker? Or Do I have to apply again to get it? When I asked the officials of my own country they say everything will be transfered just as it is.

Thank you!

Hi again.

It means that your passport must have at least 6 months validity on the date they issue your sticker; 6 months from 19 Oct 2022 is 6 April 2022, so that's the very latest date they will apply your MVV sticker to your current passport.

Normally, you would have to retain your old passport that has any current visas, they don't re-issue visas (which is what MVV is) for new passports.  You do need to notify IND if your travel documents change.

Hope this helps.

Allright, I have appointment on 14 of March which poses no problem i assume.

When I notify the IND, what can be the procedure? Will I have to send my passport back to Dutch consolate in Turkey to get my sticker back? Or If I understood correctly, I have to keep my old passport with me at all times to show it had MVV if the need arises?

Hi again.

From your appointment with IND you will ultimately get a Residence Permit (Verblijfstitel) similar to this example:

I don't understand the rest of your post.  Your appointment with the IND will be at your local desk in the Netherlands, you will have your own passport with your MVV sticker in it with you.

Hope this helps.

I am talking about getting the sticker on my passport now. I have the appointment with the embassy soon.

But when I get my new passport in 8 months, how am  I suppose to use my MVV sticker and residence permit on my old passport? Do I have to keep it with myself all the time

Cynic

Hi again.

Yes, you need your passport with you at all times, the Dutch law (Compulsory Identification Act) requires everybody over the age of 14 to carry an original ID (not a copy) at all times, so you must have your passport with you at all times.  The Police can ask you to produce it at any time.

Hope this helps.

No. My question about passport is more specific. My passport will be expired when it has the MVV on it and I will be in the NL. I will issue a new passport from my consulate which naturally wont have no stamps on it whatsoever. What do you think I need to do in this situation? Getting stamped again or carrying my old passport with me along with the newer one?

Sorry for not being clear before

You carry both passports.

Huh. I never thought this would be actually a legal and valid solution. I guess I should also notify the IND in the future, right.

Cynic

Hi again.

You notify the IND of any changes related to your residence permit, so if you change your name, address, passport etc.

I think the only person who will show the slightest interest in your MVV is the Immigration guy at Schiphol when you first arrive.  One last point, when I went through this, I never got a residence card, but I was issued an ID card by the Gemeente which was certainly easier on my wallet than the old UK passports, perhaps the residence cards are acceptable as ID; ask at the IND when you have your appointment; maybe it will save you carrying 2 passports.

Hope this helps.

Hi Veli,

I have the same question as you. I am currently applying for residency and will have to renew my UK passport before the end of this year.

From doing some reading it suggests that the MVV is a temporary visa intended to bridge the gap between starting your stay and receiving a full residency card.

Cynic is this your understanding? Does that mean that in the future traveling to NL from another country I would need my current (new) passport without the MVV and my residency card. Not my new passport and old passport. And that for everyday in the NL I would just need to carry the residence card?

Cynic

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

MVV is a Dutch temporary document that is intended to cover you while you go through the residency process, it acts as both a work permit and residency document; British citizens are exempt from MVV () - it has nothing to do with Brexit, so you won't have an MVV sticker in your passport.  In the future, when entering the Netherlands, you will need your valid British passport, plus your Dutch residency document.

Dutch law requires you to carry ID at all times, this will take you to the Dutch Government website that describes the Compulsory Identification process.  It does state there that a passport or residence card are "valid identity documents in the Netherlands".

Hope this helps.
