Moving to Portugal

Post new topic

Hey everyone.

I am planning on moving soon from Denmark to Lisbon. I am having a bit of trouble finding a budget friendly way to move my belongings. I am getting crazy quotas for around 10,000 euros to move my stuff.

I just wanted to ask around and hear how people move their stuff in Europe ?
Do you ship it, moving company, rent unlimited kms car ?

Without knowing how much stuff you need to ship and how much packing/unpacking you need (including pcking materials and their disposal) and insurance requirements it is hard to say whether EUR 10k are adequate. All of our stuff came in a 20ft shipping container and was packed and unpacked by a removes company and was insured. However, we started from the Middle East.

might be worth taking a look at. However, we moved with one of the big international moving companies which had Galamas as partner in Portugal.

We are planning to move in July/August to Cascais/Estoril and I am driving while wife and one of our children are flying with the dog. This means I have a lot of space in the car and we're hardly brining any furniture. Mostly paperwork, clothes, some plates & cutlery, memories and four bicycles. Planning to rent transport for the big stuff and some boxes, hopefully it fits in a 20ft container. Will check for offers this week and revert.

We are having a similar problem -- moving from Austria to Algarve the quotes were almost 20k per load (meaning either moving truck with hanger or large double truck). Since we have to move our workshop in addition to personal life we do have quite some stuff. I am getting ready to have a big bonfire ;-) Unfortunately, container transport is not easy to impossible within Europe, especially right now. We are currently looking into the alternative to using a Portugese company, whose route goes through Austria frequently, hoping that their rates might be less if we manage to share a ride, so to speak. Happy to keep you posted what we find, I should know more within the next week or so? Good luck, Tania

Shipped our belongings from Vancouver in December 2021 - 20" container - for almost 14,000 CA$ (we locked in the quote around October 2021). That's about 10,000 euros now. Still waiting to receive our container, hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks, after endless recurrent delays, which means shipping is really tight currently, which may explain the crazy prices (and then you have the inflation too).

Hi Christian. That is really a long time, but the prices don't surprise. My longest container route was from New Zealand to Tunisia, which took 2 months. Good luck with customs.
