D7 visa Portugal

Post new topic

Matiew
I applied to the NY center last May 10 for a passive income visa. It has been over 60 days now and have not heard anything back even after numerous calls, emails and appearing in person at the NY center. No one is able to give me any information on where my passport could be or the status. Is it denied or lost? Any advice is most appreciated. Thank you.

@Matiew
i also apply for D7 but not from NY. i applied from UAE and I submitted my Passport dated 06-05-2022, but no updates.

Hi Matiew, Welcome.

Normally, obtaining the temporary four-month visa in your home country can take up to 60 days.  But with the ongoing SEF delays... we can expect more...
Andrew Rockwell

Summary

D7 residence visa for husband and wife.  We applied from Florida, processed through Washington D.C.  We used a company in Lisbon to help us with the whole process.  Very useful!

Note: we took our dog with us.

We sold our house, our car, our furniture, everything!  We took three suitcases, carry-ons, and a dog crate.
Like Hernán Cortés in the year 1519,  we burned the ships and forward we go.  (We've already lived in several countries and speak Portugues.)

May 4, 2022 - officially started the process by emailing VFS Global requesting FedEx labels for our documents
June 6 - VFS Global sent our docs to the Washington D.C. embassy
July 7 - passports received from the embassy with our visas
We did NOT go to Washington D.C.  There was no state-side interview.  Everything was handled by email and FedEx.
August 2021 - we spent one month in Porto/Lisbon - we decided to move when our house hit our price point.  Note, Portuguese is already our house language.
April 7, 2022 - we hit our price point and sold our house, we started getting docs together and moving money to Portugal Bank account.
- we delayed closing for 3 months to get the D7 residence visas
April 24 - started moving money to Portugal account (which we obtained August 2021) for two years of minimum salary in Portugal (18,000.00 Euros)
May 4 - documents ready for application,  We sent email to VFS requesting FedEx labels invoice for our documents
May 13 - received FedEx labels from VFS
May 16 - VFS Global in Washington D.C. received our FedEx documents
May 19 - VFS requested and received additional docs
May 19 - June 6 - What was VFS doing?  It was difficult to obtain tracking numbers.  Communication with VFS was difficult.  While VFS responded fairly fast, they hardly ever actually answered the question I asked.   Same response many times.
June 6 - VFS Global said the Portugal embassy Washington D.C. had our applications, VFS stated it would take 60 days to process
June 27 - I sent the embassy an email inquiring about the status of our application and advising deadlines for our airline tickets
July 1 - we were advised by the embassy that we were approved - now Fedex your passports to us
July 5 - our passports arrived at the embassy
July 6 - closed on our house, we delayed closing 3 months to wait for the visas
July 7 - passports received with D7 visas valid for 4 months, and a letter directing us to the SEF website for an appointment
July 10 - My wife departed for Lisbon
July 12 - I took the dog to a USDA certified veterinarian for the USDA vaccination certificate for Portugal entry.  She needed a microchip and rabies vaccination from the same date.  I used a company in Tampa to schedule and handle the USDA certificate.
July 14 - The USDA certificate was returned in error, it was missing the raised USDA seal. Resent for correction.  The Air Animal company in Tampa caught the error.
July 19 - I received dog USDA vaccination certificate
July 20 - departed for Portugal.  The dog papers were verified at TAP airlines in Miami.    The agent at TAP airlines definitely verified that the papers had the USDA raised seal.     July 21 - arrived in Lisbon.  I walked out through the “Nothing to Declare†exit with the dog crate. I took a pre-scheduled van to the final destination.
The immigration process was very fast. I did not go through the EU passport line.  I pointed out that I have a D7 visa, the agent just looked at it and stamped my passport
December 9 - SEF interview scheduled
For those with dogs, we’re finding it very difficult to get a long term rental in Porto that accepts dogs.  Apparently, people in Portugal don’t crate their dogs, and bored dogs do what bored dogs do, when left alone.  We crate our dog.
We are in a 3 month AirBnb that accepts dogs.  We were planning to rent for a year and buy an apartment during that year.  Now, we will probably purchase it within 3 months.
WARNING: As of July 21 2022, there were many, many tourists in Lisbon, DO NOT PLAN on catching a bus at the airport.  When we left the Lisbon airport there were over 100 people waiting in line for the bus.   Arrange a car and driver.  Unless, waiting for a bus is part of your plan.
SunsetSteve
THanks for that, Andrew. Question: Did you arrange a one year lease at the aìrbnb to get  the approval?
Andrew Rockwell
We have a 3 month AirBnB that began July 9, 2022.  However,  we had a cousin in Lisbon sign a "TERMO de RESPONSIBILIDADE" , a term of responsibility guaranteeing us so we didn't submit the AirBnB with our application.

The immigration company we used would give you a  "TERMO de RESPONSIBILIDADE", but of course, they would charge you.

My understanding is that for the initial approval you could use AirBnB, but for the SEF interview you need something more permanent like a 6 month or annual apartment lease.

Our plan was to rent an annual lease apartment, failing in that due to our dog, we'll buy an apartment before the SEF interview.  We want an apartment in Porto near the Metro line and markets. We DON'T want a car.

My wife and I have applied for a D7 Visa with passive income on August 5th.  We are still waiting.

We did, after repeated emails and finally a phone call to the embassy in Washington, receive an email stating we had to show proof of a Portugese bank account on October 7th.  We sent that with proof of a bank account after pushing it through hard for a month, on November 5th.

It is now December 15th, we are still waiting for a decision.  We have called the embassy again and at least got an email stating the received our banking and NIF information, but nothing further.

It has been now over four months since this began.  How much longer should we expect this to go on?

Is there an attorney group anyone could recommend to contact SEF in Lisbon to see where our applications lie and how much longer we should expect?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello to everybody! We are intending to apply for d7 visd and at the first step! For making an appointment from the consulate in our country, should both of us do it or just my husband (applicant) is enough?

And the second question is :both  of us can move there at the same time? We are from Iran and now living in Turkey

JohnnyPT

Hi Negar, Welcome.

Sure, you can apply as a couple and children if you have them. It is even an advantage to apply them together rather than separately:

Hello! New to this forum so apologies if I am asking redundant questions. My partner and I both have applied for our D-7 visa however only one of us so far has been approved. My partners visa begins Jan 28th. He just picked up his visa from the San Francisco consulate. HOWEVER, the SEF appointment that was printed on the visa is scheduled in 2 days, December 22nd. Obviously he can't make it but trying to find out how to reschedule has been difficult. The consulate said we need to contact SEF. Does anyone have any experience with this and know how we should proceed? We don't want to jeopardize our visa's. I expect/hope mine will follow shortly. thank you in advance.

Negar Nasiri

@JohnnyPT hi Johnny ! Thanks for replying . Can you explain how ? Because in Portugal website there is no option to select about spouse document and stuff like that .

JohnnyPT

The visa application is done through the VFSGlobal application. See here what you need:

Negar Nasiri

@JohnnyPT it is unavailable for turkey, unfortunately. Just we have access to the Portugal consulate in Ankara

JohnnyPT

You have to ask your questions by email to them... not here...

Hi, Welcome.

About rescheduling with SEF, it is always a "dark zone" that I don't get involved in...

Hello Andrew, thank you for sharing your experience. Do you have the email for the embassy? I’ve emailed them several times and no response.

@ElleOC

There are usually no restrictions on renting if you have cats. Many people have them.

daphnelavern

@ElleOC I met with my landlady/owner via Zoom Thursday and she is allowing me to bring my cat (with no problem!), so, thank you @JohnnyPT for the confirmation.

My D7 visa appointment is in late Feb at the San Francisco Consulate, but I remember when I made the big decision 2.5 years ago and felt like it was sooooooo far away. However, the time flew by!!

I'm sharing my experience bc, when I went on the VFS site in early Oct, I expected to book my appt for early- to mid-Jan, but found that the very earliest appt available was late Feb!!

Not sure where you're located, but I heard earlier this week that the SF Consulate appointments are now - unbelievably -  booking 18 months out!, so you might want to check timing to get a general idea how soon you may want to get your appt on the books.  I know 2 years may seem like a loooong time away, but it can really zoom by. Hope it helps!1f603.svg

daphnelavern

@ElleOC - Yeah, leaving my cat would have been a non-starter/deal breaker for me, too, so I'm super happy, as well.

I've never gotten a visa before so, unfortunately, I don't know how long the interview will be, etc.  Since I  live in the SF Bay Area, I do have to go to my appointment in-person, but I'm not sure if those who live outside of the immediate area have to go in-person.  Hopefully someone else on this forum will be able to guide you on that.

My understanding is that you can choose a date as far out as is available on the VFS site (meaning, I don't think you have to take the first available).  I'm really not sure, so please be sure to get confirmation from others/VFS/etc.

I'm positive you don't have to have "everything in place" when you make the appointment (at least I didn't/don't and am still gathering/confirming some docs, etc.), but you DO have to have all of the requirements/docs/forms/papers/funds, etc. that they ask for in place when you go to your appointment.  As far as having 6-months post visa approval to leave, again, I'm not sure, but my understanding is that one would have to retrieve/initiate/use the visa within 90 days or it would become invalid (and you'd have to start over from the beginning).

No, I don't plan to live in Porto.  I'll be in a small village in the Santarem District, but because of the relatively small size of Portugal, I know I'll be all over the place at some point (at least that's the plan).1f642.svg  Happy Planning!!

donn25

It has been long enough that I could be forgetting something, but the No. 1 big thing is, of course, Deciding you're going, and then the No. 2 big thing seems to be getting a place of residence nailed down, in advance.  It might be better to wait to sign up for an appointment until you're pretty sure you've figured out this very awkward requirement - not that you have a lease agreemen in hand necessarily, but you should at least have a pretty good idea how you're going to swing it.

But do sign up as soon as you can.  That's just the beginning of the waiting around phases, which will define your life for a good while.

We took the train from Seattle to SF.  Got to Oakland the next morning, went over to the VFS office and did our thing, and had plenty of time to wander around SF and have dinner before boarding the return train.

@ElleO

Hi there,

We have two cats and had a lot of trouble getting a rental that allows pets. We finally did find a place in Portugal near the northern border of Spain. Had we gone to portugal in person to find a place, it may have been easier.

daphnelavern

@donn25 Agree about the lease agreement! Having that nailed down in advance of my VFS appointment was my most challenging obstacle. I'm thankful that I was able to find a place - not in the exact village where I planned to live and had to pivot a bit, but, as we all know, that's life! - but it is only 7 miles east, across a picturesque bridge over the Tagus River, so I can flex with living there for a year.  That will give me time to find - and explore in person - my longer term residence location.  Thank you!

@Andrew Rockwell

Thank for information.

Question. I am applied in VFS for D7 and they approve my applcation then they send it to Portugal to SEF . They schedule meeting. After approved can I go back to USA to sell my house or I shoul to stay 6 months as d7 requested

Thank

JohnnyPT

@Ludap,

Once you have been granted a residence permit, you can travel whenever you want. You can leave the country for a period of 6 consecutive months/year or 8 months interspersed within the total period of validity of the permit.

Ludap

Thanks for infomation.

I would like to clarify, because there are so many sources on this topic.  After receiving a visa D7 in Portugal , I have to stay for 4 months in Portugal or  could right away fly back to USA to finish my bussiness. So with D7 I must to be in Portugal   ANY 4 consic. months during the year?

Thanks in advance
