D7 visa Portugal

Summary
My wife and I have applied for a D7 Visa with passive income on August 5th. We are still waiting.
We did, after repeated emails and finally a phone call to the embassy in Washington, receive an email stating we had to show proof of a Portugese bank account on October 7th. We sent that with proof of a bank account after pushing it through hard for a month, on November 5th.Â
It is now December 15th, we are still waiting for a decision. We have called the embassy again and at least got an email stating the received our banking and NIF information, but nothing further.
It has been now over four months since this began. How much longer should we expect this to go on?
Is there an attorney group anyone could recommend to contact SEF in Lisbon to see where our applications lie and how much longer we should expect?
Any help would be appreciated.
Hello to everybody! We are intending to apply for d7 visd and at the first step! For making an appointment from the consulate in our country, should both of us do it or just my husband (applicant) is enough?
And the second question is :both of us can move there at the same time? We are from Iran and now living in Turkey
Hi Negar, Welcome.
Sure, you can apply as a couple and children if you have them. It is even an advantage to apply them together rather than separately:

Hello! New to this forum so apologies if I am asking redundant questions. My partner and I both have applied for our D-7 visa however only one of us so far has been approved. My partners visa begins Jan 28th. He just picked up his visa from the San Francisco consulate. HOWEVER, the SEF appointment that was printed on the visa is scheduled in 2 days, December 22nd. Obviously he can't make it but trying to find out how to reschedule has been difficult. The consulate said we need to contact SEF. Does anyone have any experience with this and know how we should proceed? We don't want to jeopardize our visa's. I expect/hope mine will follow shortly. thank you in advance.
@JohnnyPT hi Johnny ! Thanks for replying . Can you explain how ? Because in Portugal website there is no option to select about spouse document and stuff like that .
The visa application is done through the VFSGlobal application. See here what you need:
@JohnnyPT it is unavailable for turkey, unfortunately. Just we have access to the Portugal consulate in Ankara
You have to ask your questions by email to them... not here...

Hi, Welcome.
About rescheduling with SEF, it is always a "dark zone" that I don't get involved in...

Hello Andrew, thank you for sharing your experience. Do you have the email for the embassy? I’ve emailed them several times and no response.

@ElleOC
There are usually no restrictions on renting if you have cats. Many people have them.
@ElleOC I met with my landlady/owner via Zoom Thursday and she is allowing me to bring my cat (with no problem!), so, thank you @JohnnyPT for the confirmation.
My D7 visa appointment is in late Feb at the San Francisco Consulate, but I remember when I made the big decision 2.5 years ago and felt like it was sooooooo far away. However, the time flew by!!Â
I'm sharing my experience bc, when I went on the VFS site in early Oct, I expected to book my appt for early- to mid-Jan, but found that the very earliest appt available was late Feb!!
Not sure where you're located, but I heard earlier this week that the SF Consulate appointments are now - unbelievably - booking 18 months out!, so you might want to check timing to get a general idea how soon you may want to get your appt on the books. I know 2 years may seem like a loooong time away, but it can really zoom by. Hope it helps!
@ElleOC - Yeah, leaving my cat would have been a non-starter/deal breaker for me, too, so I'm super happy, as well.
I've never gotten a visa before so, unfortunately, I don't know how long the interview will be, etc. Since I live in the SF Bay Area, I do have to go to my appointment in-person, but I'm not sure if those who live outside of the immediate area have to go in-person. Hopefully someone else on this forum will be able to guide you on that.
My understanding is that you can choose a date as far out as is available on the VFS site (meaning, I don't think you have to take the first available). I'm really not sure, so please be sure to get confirmation from others/VFS/etc.
I'm positive you don't have to have "everything in place" when you make the appointment (at least I didn't/don't and am still gathering/confirming some docs, etc.), but you DO have to have all of the requirements/docs/forms/papers/funds, etc. that they ask for in place when you go to your appointment. As far as having 6-months post visa approval to leave, again, I'm not sure, but my understanding is that one would have to retrieve/initiate/use the visa within 90 days or it would become invalid (and you'd have to start over from the beginning).
No, I don't plan to live in Porto. I'll be in a small village in the Santarem District, but because of the relatively small size of Portugal, I know I'll be all over the place at some point (at least that's the plan). Happy Planning!!
It has been long enough that I could be forgetting something, but the No. 1 big thing is, of course, Deciding you're going, and then the No. 2 big thing seems to be getting a place of residence nailed down, in advance. It might be better to wait to sign up for an appointment until you're pretty sure you've figured out this very awkward requirement - not that you have a lease agreemen in hand necessarily, but you should at least have a pretty good idea how you're going to swing it.
But do sign up as soon as you can. That's just the beginning of the waiting around phases, which will define your life for a good while.
We took the train from Seattle to SF. Got to Oakland the next morning, went over to the VFS office and did our thing, and had plenty of time to wander around SF and have dinner before boarding the return train.
@ElleO
Hi there,
We have two cats and had a lot of trouble getting a rental that allows pets. We finally did find a place in Portugal near the northern border of Spain. Had we gone to portugal in person to find a place, it may have been easier.
@donn25 Agree about the lease agreement! Having that nailed down in advance of my VFS appointment was my most challenging obstacle. I'm thankful that I was able to find a place - not in the exact village where I planned to live and had to pivot a bit, but, as we all know, that's life! - but it is only 7 miles east, across a picturesque bridge over the Tagus River, so I can flex with living there for a year. That will give me time to find - and explore in person - my longer term residence location. Thank you!
@Andrew Rockwell
Thank for information.
Question. I am applied in VFS for D7 and they approve my applcation then they send it to Portugal to SEF . They schedule meeting. After approved can I go back to USA to sell my house or I shoul to stay 6 months as d7 requested
Thank
@Ludap,
Once you have been granted a residence permit, you can travel whenever you want. You can leave the country for a period of 6 consecutive months/year or 8 months interspersed within the total period of validity of the permit.
Thanks for infomation.
I would like to clarify, because there are so many sources on this topic. After receiving a visa D7 in Portugal , I have to stay for 4 months in Portugal or could right away fly back to USA to finish my bussiness. So with D7 I must to be in Portugal  ANY 4 consic. months during the year?
Thanks in advance
