American ex-pats social security payments.

FindlayMacD

Now that Elon Musk has taken over the US Treasury Payments System and installed his own people in there to run it, his own people being a bunch of 6 kids he calls IT Specialists, all aged between 18 to 24, are any of the American ex-pats on here even slightly worried about their future social security cheques arriving on time or arriving at all.

American here, not worried.  Will find out a week from today.

@mugtech

Your also not worried that these juvenile IT novices now have access to all your most sensitive data and with one accidental keystroke, could delete it or mess it up or share it with world even ........ I certainly would be.

mugtech

       Worry had no positive results.

gregparker6201

First I have heard of this. So I Googled it!

Even the legacy media ( which I don’t believe most of the time) are not making a big deal of this. And no mention of 18 to 24 year olds running the show that I can find

Personally Im not concerned, its 12 o’clock time to meet some friends for lunch and beerðŸº

Sometimes it can helpful to worry. This isn’t one of those times. Mainly because this is one of those instances where you could be getting yourself all worked up or would like to control something that isn’t within your reach to control.

It can be prudent to ask yourself, What can you do about it? Your worry should be equal or less than the answer to that question.

Exactly.  Worrying about things you cannot change qualifies as 3M  (mostly mental masturbation)

Greg, allow an aussie to agree ...

Hopefully you're having that beer in the Philippines.

Perfect.  The world's perfect place not to worry.

And Phils people and places love Americans.

Happy trails all

I'm quite happy to have some of the smartest people in the country, who have not been corrupted by the system, looking for ways to improve efficiency and save big money.

Then again, I'm one of those who believes that America has institutionalized corruption to such an extent that it is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. So, we REALLY need some idealistic whiz kids to root out the embedded corruption.

All the Trumpeteers keep talking about corruption and fraud, but Trump's people are in charge of the government, including all branches of the judicial system from the Attorney General down and there plenty of devout Trumpeteer District Attorneys all over the country that would love to make a name for himself or herself, that said, don't you think that it's very strange that no one has been arrested and charged with fraud or corruption? Elon Musk is not cutting waste or fraud or corruption, he is cutting things that both he and Donald Trump don't like.

"Don't you think that it's very strange that no one has been arrested and charged with fraud or corruption?" or maybe you just don't think.?

I as millions & millions receive our benefits by direct deposit, not by cheques, really a safe way of receiving benefits timely.

Elon Musk's successful endeavors include: Tesla, SpaceX, Paypal, Starlink, The Boring Company, Neurlink, xAI and past founder of Open AI.

Good way to continue getting them forever, as long as you have someone sign the proof-of-life document SSA sends (from what I understand).

Elon Musk's whiz kids analyzed the SSA database. They found that 18.9 million active SSNs with birthdates of 1920 or earlier lacked a date of death, meaning they are still active. And presumably getting checks. And other benefits.

The US government is sooooo efficient....

Just wait. It takes time to build a case. Trump announced that they are going to investigate officials who seem to have accumulated much more wealth than their salaries would allow (presumably members of Congress, Governors, and the like)--like Joe Biden.

I guess some people don't think....about what is involved in uncovering and prosecuting corruption that has been covered up by a corrupt-to-the-core system.

Draining the swamp means jail for the swampiest creatures. just wait....

Interesting post and info bizwizard if not horrifying. Do you have a credible source for your info?

If true how many souls are milking the cow?

Perhaps then maybe justice will come to the perpetrators and possibly part of the 37 trillion debt given the numbers you mentioned,,,,,,, sad if true.

Possible some will be retiring to the Bahamas or Switzerland post haste?

We will see I suppose.

@bigpearl

"A full decade ago in 2015, the Social Security Administration’s Inspector General reported that 6.5 million active Social Security numbers were assigned to people aged 112 or older, despite there being only 35 such individuals known to be living worldwide. (Robert Kennedy should be happy to hear about this.) That was alarming enough, but in 2023, an expanded audit looked at SSNs aged 100 and up. This time, 18.9 million active SSNs with birthdates of 1920 or earlier lacked a date of death, meaning they are still active."

The SSA IG did a follow-up audit in 2023. Here's a quote:

"  In response to our 2015 report, SSA considered multiple options, including adding presumed death information to these Numident records. SSA ultimately decided not to proceed because the options would be costly to implement, would be of little benefit to the agency, would largely duplicate information already available to data exchange consumers and would create cost for the states and other data exchange partners. "16 SSA also believed a regulation would be required to allow it to add death information to these records, and adding presumed death information to the Numident would increase the risk of inadvertent release of living individuals' personal information in the DMF.

We note that, as of January 2023, the full DM included death information on approximately 137 million deceased numberholders. Over 18 million missing death records represents more than 10 percent of the records in the full DMF. Therefore, the death information SSA currently provides Federal benefit-paying agencies--and will begin providing to the Department of the Treasury's Do Not Pay initiative in December 2023--to help prevent improper payments to deceased individuals, omit information for more than 1 of every 10 deceased numberholders."

Aren't US government employees the best? ...too much trouble to correct....

The mayor of NYC is a great example of the current battle against corruption.

bigpearl

You wouldn't get away with that in Australia, some things maybe but Oz social security are a holes to the enth degree.

One wonders your US social security system given what you have said and smacks of many people milking the cow and then putting it out in the pasture only to milk it again tomorrow.

Sounds like heads will roll and though I'm not a Trump fan perhaps? As said there may be many suddenly adopting a foreign country as home.

The US must have a different system to Australia as I don't nor ever will qualify after paying copious amounts of tax for 45 years,,,,,,,,,,, no sir you have too many assets and too much money in your bank accounts as well as having a large superannuation fund, a kick in the guts yes but at least given our laws they are all over it and those that grafted and made headway are fortunate enough to not need a piddly pension but still a lie told to the constituents.

All said and done if what you say is true then the now government will save the honest people for the future of the countries security with some hope of reducing an overwhelming deficit. One wonders how many decades the cows have been milked if true.

Musk's so-called "experts" just don't understand how the Cobol programming language works.

@Bizwizard said  "Elon Musk's whiz kids analyzed the SSA database. They found that 18.9 million active SSNs with birthdates of 1920 or earlier lacked a date of death, meaning they are still active. And presumably getting checks. And other benefits."

Nope. Means nothing of the sort. Just because they are still "active" just means they were never taken off the lists and out of the database. Since these people were born before 1903, it is undoubtedly a result of old paper records. Apparently 4000 may actually still be in use, but that's a far cry from insinuating that millions of people are fraudulently receiving benefits. Not arguing that it isn't a potential for fraud of various sorts and should be cleaned up though. But they are claiming all kinds of crazy things.

A July 2024 report from Social Security’s inspector general states that from fiscal years 2015 through 2022, the agency paid out almost $8.6 trillion in benefits, including $71.8 billion—or less than 1%—in improper payments. Most of the erroneous payments were overpayments to living people.  Part of the confusion comes from Social Security’s software system based on the COBOL programming language, which has a lack of date type. This means that some entries with missing or incomplete birthdates will default to a reference point of more than 150 years ago. The news organization WIRED first reported on the use of COBOL programming language at the Social Security Administration.

But yeah to the original question - I do have concerns about the way they are taking the chainsaw to things. It's pure chaos. Now even some of the farmers and small business owners who voted for Trump are upset that their FDA and other reimbursements have been frozen and they can get no response as to if or when they will be paid.  Musk is known for "break it first, then fix it" but that is not a good way to cleanup massively complex (and old) IT systems that millions rely on for their income, health care, etc. I worked in IT and we never did things that way - it was all about careful analysis and documentation, backups and redundancy, and small changes that could be reverted back to the prior version. Things are still mostly done that way I believe. Until now.. with the most critical systems we have.

Can't believe folks here think this approach is a good idea - just look at how badly the government here in the PI works and compare to the US where things generally function properly - despite all the inflammatory rhetoric, disinformation and criticism - I get my SSA payments on time, we can renew our passports quickly, I pay my car registration online, get my tax refund in a couple weeks.. geez..

A deceased Expat family is more likely to be collecting SS benefits by plan or the reporting of his death not being reported. In the US the funeral director handles all the legal paperwork, including a death notification to SS.

Suggest you limit you intake of US based news reports

I believe very little of what they say anyway!

My SS check arrived as always on 1st of the month

US news? Perhaps some need to watch world news and the ramifications/feedback from all sources as well as an education to world events.

Nice you got your cheque and I'm sure you always will. I don't qualify with my government as I worked too hard all my life and 45 years off paying tax into a lie?

I care little for the money but I can't get over the lies preached all my working life.

The dive on world markets? A year or 2 I will buy more and make more, time reveals all. One wonders the powers the powers that be and if they have the same goal? Crash the markets for an end game?

It's a little premature on what President Trump did or did not do as he has been in office only 44 days. Some of his cabinet choices are still waiting confirmation.

I suggest you come back in two years and give us a reassessment.

I never said that Bob, your newly elected president said that through his campaign and has no hope of delivering some sort of resolution in Ukrian nor cheaper prices for US citizens in fact the war will continue and the American constituents will face higher prices.

DAY !?

I have been listening to his waffle on for over an hour now and not once has he addressed what he promised through his campaign rhetoric to lower prices/end wars etc.

Seems he is talking to the sheep and ass lickers and not doing what he is supposed to be doing,,,,,,, running a country responsibly.

I said in another thread,,,,,,, give him 2 or 3 years then criticize,,,,,,,, the followers are already backing away after 44 days.

We make our own dressing Bob, Balsamic, a little olive and sesame oil, a touch of ground pepper as well as a lot of love building the salad and it doesn't take 43 or 44 days to create disrespect for the salad nor the voters.

Eat the salad or push it aside,,,,,,, seems some are simply stuck with the salad and have to eat it with no dressing/choice.

Stopping a war in one day, lowering food prices day one, cough, we make a salad and consume it and only takes half an hour, Said enough.

I don't recall anyone referring VP Vance as a war hero, he was deployed in Iraq for six months during the Iraq war. 61 Journalists died in the Iraq war.
