Panama has a well-developed internet infrastructure, particularly in urban areas. Most households and businesses rely on broadband Wi-Fi services from a few key telecommunications companies. This article overviews the leading internet providers in the country, their coverage, available plans and installation requirements.

Internet coverage is generally reliable in Panama. The capital and other Panamanian cities provide high-speed connections. However, occasional outages and slow speeds can occur. Some remote areas may have more limited options or intermittent internet. Most providers offer customer service through phone, online chat and in-store assistance.

Major internet providers in Panama

Two major providers cover the lion's share of the telecommunications industry in Panama.

Cable & Wireless Panama (CWP)

The oldest player in Panama's telecommunications market, Cable & Wireless Panama, offers fiber-optic and cable internet with speeds reaching up to 1 Gbps in select areas. In 2022, CWP extended its portfolio by acquiring Claro, another leading provider in Panama. CWP sells bundled TV, landline and internet packages starting at $31.

Tigo

CWP's direct competition is Tigo, which acquired Movistar, one of the country's telecommunications giants. Tigo offers cable and fiber services with speeds up to 1 Gbps, along with bundled packages that include internet, landline and TV, starting at $43.

Other internet providers

Several smaller internet providers in Panama include:

  • InterFast;
  • Wipet;
  • Ovnicom;
  • Speed Networks Panama.

Additionally, Starlink—Elon Musk's satellite internet company—operates in the country and offers the following plans:

  • Residential Lite $35;
  • Residential $50.

Users must purchase the Starlink kit, which costs around $300 in Panama.

Requirements for Internet installation in Panama

To have Wi-Fi installed in your apartment, house or office, you must provide the following:

  • Identification documents (a passport or a ³¦Ã©»å³Ü±ô²¹, the Panamanian ID card);
  • Proof of address (a utility bill or a rental agreement).

Installation is typically free of charge; the times vary by provider. In urban areas, one can get a technician appointment within a few days. In rural zones, the wait period may be longer.

Mobile internet in Panama

Cable & Wireless Panama (branded as Mas Móvil for its mobile services) and Tigo also share the mobile phone service market. You can get a prepaid number or a postpaid contract with either company.

Additionally, eSIM services like and offer the convenience of internet access right upon arrival in the country.

Takeaway

Panama's telecommunications industry is well-developed, keeping pace with modern life. The local market is dominated by two large companies that offer bundled internet, landline and TV packages. However, if you only need the internet, you can get it through several smaller firms. While urban areas have reliable connectivity, rural areas may experience intermittent or limited service.
