@jayatbakers From the personal experience of a near relative, once you get the K visa, you will next have to get the Alien Certificate. This is a small card and can take up to 2-3 months to be issued. When you have that Alien Certificate you can move in and out of Kenya freely. When entering Kenya, there is a separate line for citizens and residents and you can use that line as opposed to the general tourist line.

@turtlego thank you for clarifying most helpful...

"When you have that Alien Certificate you can move in and out of Kenya freely"

This is not quite correct.  Once you have the Class K permit endorsed in your passport, you can move feely across the border and return.

The Foreigners Certificate is your Kenyan ID, which you carry at all times when you are in Kenya.  It is irrelevant to travel out of the country.

Confused?

OK.  When you get approved for a Class K permit (or any other permit), you passport will be stamped with the type of permit and the dates when it is valid.  As your passport is your travel document, you can choose to leave Kenya and re-enter - without any need to apply for a visa - the Class K permit acts as your right to enter and reside in Kenya.

The Foreigners Certificate is nothing to do with travel out of Kenya.  It is a legal requirement in Kenya to carry ID and if you remain in the country for over 90 days (eg extending a single entry visa), you are supposed to apply for a Foreigners Certificate.  When a Class K (or similar) permit is approved, you must apply for a Foreigners Certificate, which is your ID while you are living in Kenya, but is not valid for travel outside Kenya.
