karenkstuart

Hi all.  My name is KK Stuart.  I currently live in Houston, Texas, but my husband and I hope to relocate to Europe for at least 1 -2 years.  I've visited Spain's coastal regions 4-5 times but long ago.  Throughout my husband's career as a Naval Aviator and ship's command, we spent much time in Malaga, Barcelona, and Mallorca.  Now we are looking to call Spain our home away from home for at least a few years.  I am looking for a nice sunny spot on the coast of Spain where there are lots of friendly ex-pats and sporting activities. This forum will help me solidify my choice of location.

@karenkstuart I strongly recommend you to move to Malaga and, in particular, to Marbella. I am from Madrid, but I moved here 5 years ago and I can honestly say that Marbella is a very wonderful city to live in. Also, you can work with peace of mind and enjoyment at all times, even if you have a hard job like mine, I am a lawyer!

I have been in Madrid, Spain for 6 years. I love it here. I come from St Louis, Mo and everything about Madrid is different. Almost no crime. Fantastic healthcare. Wonderful public transportation. Clean. Great sights to see. I’ve run with the bulls twice in Pamplona and I have walked the Camino de Santiago twice. Beautiful cities well within reach. So grateful. I’ll never move back to the U.S.

We are moving to Asturias in Sept 2023 (death and taxes willing1f601.svg).  We are retired living in Washington State having worked for the State of Alaska for 21 years.

We will be starting the NLV process with the San Francisco Consulate next month as that starts our 90 day window before submitting our application May 1.

We are neither wealthy nor are we broke... we have just enough (and hopefully a little more when we move) to make it, provided the Spain taxes do not deplete our retirement funds too quickly.

Public employment exemption to Spain tax is a key issue.

Taxes will need to be examined in more detail before we are 100% committed but so far information appears to support our ability to afford the move.  I have a question on the tax thread in the forum and would appreciate any insights.

We would also appreciate any information and guidance on renting a place to live (apartment, flat, or small house) outside of the urban areas in Asturias.

We are both studying Spanish with duolingo and so far are passing the A1 language level exam.

We are looking forward to the move and will share our experience as we move through the process.

Hi there,

I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Literature from Deakin University. I have a high expertise in all things English, when it comes to speaking and writing.

I have tutored in English and mathematics in the past for High School students and am currently taking a 10-week 3-hour course in learning Spanish for my upcoming trip.

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Thank you Bhavna,

Unfortunately I have started having issues with the job site shortly after joining. I got an email to view my job ad and the links are broken. I have tried several browsers. And the system can no longer recognize the password.

It would be great to get some help ;)

Hi!

I am Leen, originally from Belgium but living in France since 2004, and now on my way to living in Spain (Cádiz provincia, Andalucía).

I have already been spending my winters there for a few years (except during the COVID confinements) and I fell in love with the area and the people.

Hello everyone!

I'm Ed from the US, 71 yrs old, exploring the idea of retiring to Spain.   I have a number of questions (surprise!) about health care, etc.    Would prefer somewhere with a cooler climate.

Thanks!

Good morning everyone, my name is Gerard and I'm from Cameroon. I moved to Spain, precisely to barcelona one month ago to join my girlfriend. I'm 29 years old, and was a nurse in Cameroon. For the moment I'm looking for a job as a nurse assistant while waiting for the equivalence of my diploma. I will be really glad if somebody from this forum could help me to find something in Barcelona.

Yoginee

Hello Gerard,

Welcome to expat.com!

Have you tried contacting local hospitals/clinics in Barcelona?

They might be able to help you.

Hello everyone!

In Nov 2022, my husband and I moved to Ponteareas, Galicia from Cincinnati.  He grew up here before leaving for 29 years.  This is my first time actually living in Spain and I'm really trying to improve my poor Spanish!

This turned out to be an earlier retirement for the both of us.  Our plans include working on our older piso to make it more homey, and cultivating his piece of land.

I miss the activities we did more of in Cincinnati such as hiking and cultural outings.  It would be great to meet up with US expats.

Michelle

@eltonandbernie I know what you mean... Having spent almost three decades in the US, you blind yourself to what other countries have to offer. Your described Madrid to a T. Salud!

dramallo

@kwazeemohdough Hi, we took the plunge from the US a couple of years ago. After that time, I feel I have completed a masters in "moving to Spain". Ping me directly if you have specific questions. I will do my best to answer them.

Hello all,

My name is Jonathan Coronado and I am from the United States. I am 38 years old thinking of retiring to Gran Canaria when my son goes to college in about 10 years or so. I am a young pensioner due to being in the Iraqi war, which now the US government pays me pension for my disabilities (back & knees). I want to learn as much as I can before I decide to make the move. I also want to know about residency for those that are pensioners. I can speak Spanish because my parents are from the Dominican Republic. Hope everyone has a good day and hope to meet people with interest in Spain and the Canary Islands.

Izzie Estrada

Hello everyone,

I am Izzie. Born and raised in Cuba. Migrated to the USA in 08' and have been residing in Austin, Texas since. I recently graduated college with a Bachelor's in Finance and International Business and would love to explore opportunities in the latter.

I am bilingual in Spanish and English, with a working proficiency in Italian. I love learning languages and hope to pick up a few more in the upcoming years. Working on Japanese and Danish.

I am currently working on a few projects.

  1. Helping launch a Fitness and Wellness company in Austin. Mainly focusing on the physical training and marketing aspects.
  2. Working as a freelancer in Graphic and Interior Design. Goal is to launch my own design studio in the future.

I would love to one day work in Spain. The idea of working as a freelancer excites me the most but since I have never been (only have friends there) I am ignorant to the workforce culture and practices.

If anyone has any nuggets of knowledge they would like to share as to how to get started as a freelance designer in Spain or maybe interested in what I am doing and would like to find out more, reach out. :)

Thanks all.

Very happy to be on board!

Good day, everyone!

I am Joan. I am thrilled to be embarking on a move to Spain. <deep sigh>. It also feels like a harrowing experience! I seek to move to Malanga with my family (husband and  sons 12 and 18. Oldest will be working.) This is not our first international move but it still seems extraordinarily nerve wracking since we have new needs and constraints.  We were previously relocated by companies or without kids.

We live in Massachusetts and I’m looking for great information on private schooling and rental housing. We hope to narrow down the school first so that we can then decide housing.

I am looking forward to this journey!

@kwazeemohdough if you want to live in a cooler part of Spain, check out the north. We recently moved to Cantabria from Granada (too hot) and are happy with our choice.

Any specific questions feel free to ask. I also recommend joining the FB group American Expatriates in Spain.

Hi everyone!

I currently live in the UK but im hoping to come to Spain if I can find work for my visa requirements.

Im easy on location as I would have a car but my mum lives in Alhaurin el grande.

I was born in Marbella and lived there until I was about 12 years old.

Hoping to move back home soon to be with some of my family. ☺🇪🇦

I am fluent in Spanish & English ☺

gwynj

@courtneyabbie

Welcome to the expat.com forum and good luck with your move back to Spain!

Have you had a consultation with a specialist immigration attorney? I'm surprised that you don't already have a Spanish permanent residence permit or passport, given that you were born there and spent over 10 years there (and were educated there).

An attorney could also confirm if there's a cunning way to get residence based on the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement (I think it's too late, but worth asking) or "reagrupacíon familiar".

courtneyabbie

@gwynj

hello!

I am surprised too! I havent spoken to anyone as such but all of the information I have read online says that I dont have any 'special' rights even though I was born there!

I never had a Spanish passport

I will definitely speak to someone and see if there is anything that can be done
