SURIGAO DEL SUR

Hello everyone and good day/evening/night.

I'm spreading my wings to explore Surigao Del Sur. I want to ask is this location safe for foreigners to live or visit? I have never visited any part of Davao while living in the Philippines.

I think you will be just fine. Davao has regularly been voted one of the safest cities in South East Asia. There is however a UK Foreign Office Advisory  Warning for Mindanao advising against either all travel or advising against all but essential travel. Davao and the surrounding are falls into the later category. I think there is also similar warnings from the US and Australia and maybe other countries.

I visited Davao a few years back and felt completely safe, something I did not feel on my first visit to Cagayan De Oro. Just take the normal precautions and you will be fine.

@arablacq3 is Surigao del Sur safe? I am a Brit with a Filipina wife, In my limited experience, yes, it is safe. We visited Bislig in the Southern portion and enjoyed excellent and inexpensive seafood while visiting some spectacular waterfalls - we drove by car from Davao City. We also visited parts of the northern portion looking for caves and beaches on a previous occasion for a magazine article, but I cannot remember where because along the way from Surigao City the mayor of Gigaquit - just North of Surigao del Sur border - gave us some "Gigaquit rum" (better than Barcardi, made from the local nipa palm) and much after that is but a vague memory.

Does that help?

The way your question was phrased suggests that you think Davao is in the Surigao Del Sur region. It ain't. It is confusing for first time visitors. There is Surigao city on the northern tip of Mindanao and then the island of Siargao (watch the spelling) : famous for surfing and foreign monied students in their university gap year who feel its mandatory to wear a coloured anklet to look 'street cred'. My last Filipina GF was from that area. Absolutely devastating - so was the scenery ;)
