Gay male offered job in Riyadh. Can my partner live with me?

Hi everyone,

I've been offerer a lucrative job in Riyadh. However, I'm gay and have a long-term partner.

Do you think it would be plausible for us to live in a 2-bedroom flat in a compound? Or is this unheard of and people would be suspicious?

Neither of us are "obviously" gay, however obviously safety is paramount to us both.

One alternative we've discussed is if he moves to Dubai instead and I visit him every other weekend...

Also, does anyone have rough prices for both a 1 bed and 2 bed in a decent compound?

Thanks everyone

I don't know where you're from and I don't know where you'll be living in Saudi, but you should both be fine as long as you forget the Western idea of being out and proud and gay "community". Discretion is key. As long as you have respect and behave accordingly, I don't see you having any problems.

Choose your compound carefully. Many compounds are not as "Western" and liberal as they were a few years ago - even women in bikinis can have issues.

Unfortunately, I don't really know much about compounds; your company should be able to help you with that. If they can't,  it might be worth getting an airbnb for your first month and taking the time to look.

@PuntosDebiles we are from Australia and I will be living in Riyadh.

Thanks for the info. Will definitely do a deep dive into the compounds. Is there any up-to-date info on all the compounds and their pricing etc?

You can live in a singles compound together and live your normal lives. Just don’t be so out in public. Riyadh has a wide variety of amusement where you can go together as ‘bro’ but not as ‘partner’.

In terms of compound, you can check with your company HR, I think they can help you find the best one.

@princesophy thanks for your message. What do you mean by a "singles compound"? Do you mean live in separate flats? Or could we live in a 2 bedroom flat together? Is it 'normal' for 2 men to share a 2 bedroom flat together?

There are two types of compound that you can find here “family compounds “ mostly those who are with their own family can occupy. The second one is the “singles compound” where only singles or bachelor are allowed to rent. So this is preferable if you are bachelor and you can live with your friend or friends in a single or two bedroom.

Hi everyone,

Following on this conversation, I´ve been also offered a position in Riyadh. I will be travelling solo with my dog. As a gay individual I have  a few questions that are related to the above:

-Is it better to live in  compound or outside (someone told me that was better outside because the possible guest (if any) wont have to leave id).

-Is there any building and/or areas where western (or not westerns) might be more discreately common?

-Is there any local sign or communication behaviour that identify the community?

Thank you so much this is very helpful!

Compound is always better.   Forget the ID issue.   Outside, depending on the community, people do tend to keep an eye on your comings and goings a lot more.    And as other posters have said, keep it low key.............you are two friends sharing an accomodation, that is all.  Don't say or do anything that causes doubt on that statement.
