ok, so sometimes I'm a little slow. (Getting money)

When I first arrived, I landed with $9900 USD since I didn't know when/how I would be getting my money here exactly. I went to exchanges, cringing every time I saw 2p exchange rate juice. Usually I would do $1000 - $1500 USD so I wouldn't have to come back soon. Then I tried my debit card in the bank ATM. Exchange rate was ok, and a single $2.50 fee from home bank. But, I was only getting 10,000 php as that's the most the ATM spits out per transaction, I would use three cards!Â
That 10,000 php is less than $200usd. So I'm paying about 1.25% juice before the exchange rate!
Well Y'all have said before, Remitly, Wise, etc. I finally check out Remitly today. I couldn't believe how fast and simple it was. Within minutes it was available! And as a bonus, the first transaction is free and I got a higher than bank exchange rate! I got 57.24 exchange rate and the actual exchange rate is 56.71. Max at that rate was $1500usd, So I took the max. After that it's 55.38 plus a $4.99usd fee. But still, less than the ATM cards! It's basically a free $50 which pays for numerous transactions in the future.
@Larry Fisher The ATM is P10,000 each time, but you can do multiple times each visit.

Chinabank ATMs will do P20000. Also BPI sometimes depending on if they have been loaded with enough. On one occasion a Chinabank ATM even allowed me P30000. A big help in combating the dreaded 250 fee for each transaction using a foreign card.

Depends on the branch. The BDO local branch I use only allows 1 transaction per day per card. I can't even switch checking/savings accounts for extra withdrawals.
I've been using a Schwab debit card; the rate is very close to the quoted rate on XE.com. THe BDO ATMs give 20,000 as do a few others, and there's one at a local hotel that gives 40,000 pre withdrawal. I've been using that.
But I deposited a check in my dollar account at Bank of Commerce, and they would not let me withdraw the funds for a full month, even though the money left my Schwab checking account in about 5 days. Never again.
Listen to bizwizard. The one thing he omitted was that Schwab refunds the ATM fees also so you don't get "juiced".
The lessons I've learned in the Philippines is never wait until the last minute for anything. You will always be disappointed with sorry sir out of stock or out of money in the case of atm withdrawal.
I use the Charles Schwab card and for larger amounts Pangea or Remitly. Pangea usually has a slightly better exchange rate. Remember don’t bring more than 9999 USD cash / TC when coming to PI.
I deposited $30,000 in Schwab a month before flying out. Five days later they didn't want my business. My credit rating wasn't high enough. fck CS. I wasn't applying for a loan! lol.
@Larry Fisher sorry that happened to you. I have had nothing but good experiences with Charles Schwab.Â
This topic of accessing funds while in the Philippines comes up time and again. 'Cash is King' as the saying goes and nowhere does this apply more than the Philippines.
Frankly anyone who lands at Ninoy Aquino with more than $2k in cash is asking for trouble. When you arrive in this country you will be 'discombobulated' with jet lag and your wits won't catch up with you for at least 72 hours. Aside from the risk of theft you could just as easily misplace the money - all for the sake of saving a few basis points on the exchange rate.

He could be discombobulated by landing at Clark International Airport only 2.9 miles from Angeles City.
@Lotus Eater I would agree especially if it is their first visit. I have brought more than that to the PI but have been coming here for 20 + years now and rarely travel alone. Especially important to have relatives or close friends picking you up if that is the case.

I usually take about 30 to 40k with me in cash and also take my debit and credit card. I have never really had jet lag when I get to the Philippines though which seems strange because did have it when I went to Japan and by what you are saying, I am guessing you get it. I do get it on my return to the UK though.
Maybe the reason I do not get jet lag on arrival is because I can not sleep on an aircraft, no matter how hard I try. On one trip while using Qatar Airlines from Manchester and doing a 3 or 4 night stopover in Seoul, I asked the rather pretty flight attendant how to combat jet lag and was expecting the usual practised answer about staying awake and not sleeping until bed time over in Seoul. I was rather surprised when she told me to stay awake on my 2nd flight from Doha to Seoul, get to my hotel and go out and drink plenty of Sake or their version of. Worked a treat though.

On one trip while using Qatar Airlines from Manchester
Given the number of trips you make to Asia Cherryann I'm amazed why you don't stick with Qatar Airways. Manchester airport is only an hours drive from Bradford. The airline has been voted no 2 on the latest Skytrax Top 100 airlines for 2023 (Philippine Airlines comes in at 80 ) The new international airport at Qatar is a delight to transit in too.
The number of airmiles you would have accrued with their frequent flyer programme would entitle you to upgrade to business class from Qatar to your chosen Asian destination and benefit from a flat bed. I guarantee you would drift off to sleep after 2 glasses of champagne before you even push back from the gate, 3 glasses of burgundy with the fish course, a glass of port with the cheese board chased down with a snifter of brandy - you will be knocked out. Literally

Of course you are correct in what you say regarding Qatar Airways and being a loyal customer and the advantages it would give me but I think the only airline I have used twice on my trips to that part of the world is Emirates. It is an even better idea since Brexit considering that if flying with several different European Airlines there may be a need to leave more time to collect bags, transfer and go through the whole immigration and security process again.
I choose my flights and routes mostly based on cost, flight duration, number of connections and flight departure and arrival times. I do not want to be arriving in the Philippines early morning and waiting a few hours before I can check into my hotel of choice. If possible I like to fly about noon, stay overnight in Manchester, have a full English Breakfast and coffee and fresh juice and shower before departing for the airport.
Back in my RAF days when stationed at Lossiemouth I would get the overnight train back to Leeds when I came home for a visit. At first I had trouble sleeping on the train but found that four cans of Tennents Lager on the train from Elgin to Aberdeen followed by 2 at the buffet bar at Aberdeen rail station and a further four on the Aberdeen to York train sometimes did the trick. I was usually asleep just before Dundee. I did once miss my stop in York and ended up in Doncaster.
@Lotus Eater Wow, P.A. moved all the way up to 80th in the rankings?
-@Larry Fisher
P.A. is even below Ryanair
@Larry Fisher
I note that the airline you flew by ( Eva Air) has come in at number 9.
The best kept secret particularly for our American friends flying in from the west coast is the Japanese carrier All Nippon Airlines charting at number 3 ( or as a well known American radio jock by the name of Paul Gambaccini adopted by the Brits would say) “ As compiled by Bilbord Magazine 🤣â€
So we have Delta ( still smile at Cherryann’s acronym) at 26. United ( recently announcing direct flights to Manila in October) at 49.
Time to explore the ‘ land of the rising sun’ gents?

For non UK readers this is the British airline ( modelled on the US carrier South West airlines)
who was contemplating charging to use the toilets.🙄
Finnair must really be suffering on their routes to Asia. Helsinki is a hub for travel there, especially to Japan and South Korea but with having to avoid Russian air space, they must be loosing some serious dosh.
They do serve a rather good Reindeer burger though.
I flew EVA for two reasons. They fly to Cebu and this means I miss Manila which is worth $1000. They are a very highly rated airlines known for excellent service. Since I was flying Business class because of the dog in cabin, I cared less about the price than the service and room. That being said, I know EVA stays pretty competitive from the west coast.

May 2022 I flew ANA in Premium Economy on my LAX-Cebu trip for the month. Actually it clears customs in Manila then transfer to PAL to Cebu. The ANA flight was very nice for premium economy and a long trip. I have no complaints. I originally had booked my retirement trip in November 2022 with ANA in Business class. But they absolutely refused to allow me to bring my 65# Belgian Malinois service animal in cabin. So I had to get a refund.

If I fly Ikea Airlines - Does that mean that the aircraft comes in a flat pack and I have to assemble it before flying?
